My bun swallowed a small nut that my bird had dropped on the floor.    I think it’s a called a brazil nut but it’s kind of small ones that are about the size of a pinky nail.  I heard him trying to chew on it (it’s still in its very hard shell)  I grabbed him and tried to stick my fingers into his mouth to get it out but I think that scared him into swallowing it whole.  Will it pass through him or will it possibly cause a blockage?  I’ve been feeding him a ton of hay which he’s been wolfing down anyway ever since the weather got cooler.  How concerned should I be?

I think if he swallowed it, it should be ok on the way out, but keep a close eye just in case. I would watch close for 1-2 days and just ensure he’s eating and pooping. And tell your bird to eat with more manners Perhaps a cube grid perimeter would keep bunny away from any spilled nuts/seeds.

I also think he should be okay in this instance, however my concern is more with the long-term effects of eating scattered seeds. Along with weight gain, seeds can cause an impaction. This is a common issue with owners who have both buns and birds. The area surrounding the cage needs to be kept immaculately clean, or blocked off.

It’s pretty easy to keep the seeds from scattering, what I did was I feed my bird on TOP of his flight cage in the middle, so seeds just drop into the bottom of his cage instead of the floor and a very quick vacuum before buns come out gets anything that may drop (though, usually nothing comes up). Nuts on the other hand, are so heavy it’s hard to keep the birds from just chucking those. If you have a play stand or something of the sort with a wide base, you could give nuts on that so it’d be harder to get them onto the floor. My rabbits are the same as yours, they’ll rush for anything the bird tries to drop on the ground, they even tried to dig into the birds seed bag so I had to put it even higher up. o.O

One nut shouldn’t cause a problem though, just keep an eye on him and make sure he eats his hay to help pass it.

Thanks guys. I wasn’t sure if I should be a little worried or very, very worried! My bun is usually pretty good about leaving alone anything the bird drops around the cage but this time since it was a nut, I guess he couldn’t resist. I’m going to keep the area better maintained. He’s been eating & acting normally since last night so I’m feeling better about ithe whole thing. I wonder if the nut will pass through his system whole? I can’t imagine that it would break down considering how hard the outer shell is. It’s about twice the size of one of his regular poops. I guess I’ll be going through his litter box……..fun!
