Hi, I am new here, looking for some advice.

I have a 3 year old mixed bunny we’ve had since he was a baby.

We got him neutered about 2 years ago, and he’s putting on weight and getting matted hair and poop around his anus. I’ve taken him to the groomer several times to get a “sanitary shave” but the poop/hair matts keep returning. Is there something I can do to prevent this?

And his weight- he is out of the cage much of the day, and plays a lot, what can I do about his weight?

I keep food in his cage at all times, should I limit it?

        Thanks for the help!

          Welcome. What is his diet?

          How much pellets, veggie, hay?

He gets timothy hay, but rarely eats it and Purina Fiber pellets. And stuff from the garden, or veggies occasionally.

How much pellets does he get? Are those timothy based pellets or alfalfa based pellets?

                Its this:

So I guess alfalfa. He always has it available in his food dish, and he sometimes eats some dog food out of the dog’s dish, but not often.

Well, first you should cut way down on the pellets – this should be the smallest part of his diet. About how much does he weigh?

Also keep him away from the dog food – it’s not good for him.

The largest part of his diet should be hay, then fresh greens and veggies and the smallest part is the pellets. You should also get him on a timothy based pellet.

Welcome here! I’d love to see a picture of him if you have one available!

From your description, it does sound like the issue is poor diet.
Here are some detailed links to help you with the subject, and please ask if you have any additional questions…

At this point, I would work on getting him on daily veggies first, then make the switch to timothy pellets while gradually reducing pellets. His hay consumption should increase as this happens.

Here is a visual representation of what his diet should be composed of:

thank you! This is the only photo I have of him, and you can’t see much, he’s busy cuddling with his dog mom.
