My baby bunny, the rescued one, I’m half afraid to name him cause I’m afraid he’s gonna die. I need to get over that.

Anyway tonight after we got back from the vet, his ears were really hot. I mean…HOT.Or at least very warm. Like the same temp that you feel on your forehead when you have a fever. . It is only 71 degrees F in here and it’s a fall day in this drafty house, but not too cold. I’d say a good temp for a bun. he showed no signs of infection at the vet, and none now either. Poos are normal, appetite, everything. Freaked out. I don’t want him to have a fever! Could there be another explanation?

Bunnies regulate their heat through their ears. They are not an effective way of judging what his body temp is. Takign the temp is usually a standard thign to do at the vet’s, I’m sure he’s fine.

Since the vet just saw him I would agree with MB. It is a way for them to let off their body heat (like we sweat). The thing to watch for is whether his ears cooled down when he calmed down in the cooler house. You could also gently take a cool, wrung out washcloth (almost dry) and wrap them for a minute or less around his ears to see if it helps cool him down. (I do that in summer sometimes.) If he shakes it off, let him, but it may feel good to him and it may make them a bit cooler and stay cool. It could just be the blood rushing to his ears from the stress of the day.

Call the vet if it’s gone on for hours.

Good plan – his ears are still pretty warm but not really hot anymore. I’m guessing he’s just got real good circulation. That was a scare though.
