I noticed on my little bun’s face that her whiskers were completely burned off!!!  I saw that they were short before but I never really looked at them.  But last night I really studied her whiskers and realized that they look burned!    There was no way that was an accident.  My cat accidently sniffed a candle and burned a couple whiskers, not both cheeks!  Why on earth would a research lab do this to a rabbit?  Its no wonder she ran into my door the moment I brought her here!!!  She was doing a binky cause it was probably the first time she has had so much room and she binkied right into my bathroom door!  Oh my gosh everything is making sense now!!  My poor little girl!  Disgusting.  Gasp!  Do you think they were studying impairment?  Loss of senses?  How long does it take for her poor little whiskers to grow back?

They should grow back soon. I have no idea why or what they were doing at the research lab (probably would upset us all to know). I know the guinea pig rescue I volunteer at took some lab piggies and some of those were used for behavior testing, one for a mosquito feeder (not sure exactly what that means), and some were accidentally bred but not used for testing.

She’s lucky to be in a safe place now with you and that’s the most important thing.

I think the mosquito feeder one is that guinea pigs and rabbits are immune to mosquitoes, if I can remember. Well not immune, but they do not respond with itching. So I can bet that they used that guinea pig as a means of a mosquito “pool” because he would not show signs of discomfort when they would feed on him. Sick I know.

I’m pretty sure a mosquito feeder is an animal they hold down onto a mesh grate above a box filled with mosquitos. They then feed off of the animal’s stomach for 10-20 minutes a day (or something like that). I’m fairly certain they usually use rabbits or guineas. Saw a video of it once and they were using a rabbit.

We should be careful about the rule regarding talking about animal testing in this thread.

I hope that guinea pig is doing well . I fear being bitten by a mosquito more than most things in life, so I feel really bad for him/her.

It was good to know though that rabbits dont respond to mosquitos like we do, so that if she ever has bumps on her skin, I wont think, oh mosquitos, but, uhoh, vet!

I have seen slight growth in her whiskers, awesome!!
