I am new to the bunny ownership and I noticed that a few people on youtube bathe their bunnies.   I am sure that show bunnies get bathed but do companion buns need to get bathed as well?  Silly question but I was curious.  What are your reasons for bathing your bun?  How often do you bathe your bun?

ONLY bathe your bunny if they have health issues, such as poopy butt. otherwise, they bathe themselves. Baths generally are not good for them.

When Samson was a baby he had to have 1 “bath”, with 1 inch of warm water in the sink to clean his bum. Besides that, bunnies don’t need baths, they are very clean animals

Do they need frequent brushing to keep from getting hair balls?

Frequent brushings, yes. Since rabbits cannot vomit, the hair collects and can cause blockage, which is dangerous. How often depends on the rabbit, obviously the longer haired ones need grooming more often.

Also, light plucking helps. there will be some loose fur sticking out. Hay is great for pushing ingested fur through the tummy.

Thanks everybody! This helps a ton! I asked the bath question cause my little bun sits on newspaper and her little paws are getting black marks on the bottom of her feet. I didnt think she would need a bath just because she had black under her paws, and was then curious about bunny baths. Is there a waterless shampoo, or could I use a damp towel to rub off the marks?

(we are on the verge of converting to litter… she doesnt appreciate my litter choosing right now, the lab only used newspaper so she hates my pre-recycled litter)

I’d just leave it, it’s not harming her in any way. Bunny fur stains REALLY easy, so chances are you aren’t going to be able to remove it anyway. Lady currently has pee stained feet from her not so hot prior living space, so I just have to wait for the fur to grow out.

ETA, actually I don’t think most show bunnies get bathed either, most get “blown out”.

I would urge you to stop using the printed newspaper and change to a litter, and keep at it (sorry) until you find one she tolerates. They quickly learn that the litter is here to stay, and it’s much better for both you and her.

I also would take a slightly damp paper towel and wipe off her paws. No baths unless there is an illness to prompt it (poopy butt) and if that happens, we can suggest several ways to bathe her. NEVER submerge her totally in water. I only suggest wiping her paws because the ink from the newspaper, while not harmful, isn’t great for her to lick either. A phonebook uses soy based ink, which is perfectly fine, so until you use the new litter consider replacing the newspaper with a shredded phone book. Letting her shred one is a fun toy, too. The newspaper ink often is soy based also, but I can’t be certain with all of them.

Thanks RabbitPam, we have done a total switch and she definitely protested for a little bit but I think she realized its not so bad. I think it was the texture that surprised her.

The fur on her paws will shed out within the next 2-4 months and they should be white again, as long as she’s on a non-staining litter.
