         Hello!

I have recently decided to have my BonBon spayed ( due to some wonderful advice I received on these forums). I am very worried though. I keep reading up on spaying and the surgery involved and I see all the risks. I’m Worried for my BonBon. She is the first Rabbit I’ve had as a pet and the first pet I’ve had spayed/neutered.

Could anyone share past experience regarding the pre and post procedure? Any tips and info? I know there is a lot fo info out there, but I’d feel more comfortable knowing how others coped.

        Thanks in advance!

I was nervous too, but both my girls came through fine. They needed to be kept in a confined space so they wouldn’t run around too much, and I needed to keep an eye n them to see if they messed with their stitches, but they were fine.

There are risks, yes, but the benefits outweigh the risks. Cancer by a very young age is not pleasant, if the spay isn’t done.

My Wilbur is being spayed on Monday, I’m worried too. But, with a rabbit savvy vet spaying should be a 99% success rate. I would really spend the time to find a really rabbit savvy vet (a really good question is: Do you fast rabbits before/after surgery? The answer should be no because rabbits cannot throw up. Here is some questions you can ask them to determine if they or aren’t http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/spay-neuter.html and it tells you what anesthesia to use, ect. I agree with Monkeybun the benefits definitely outweigh the risks and you’ll most likely have a better behaved bunny and a closer relationship with her.

How do you ensure she doesnt move around to much? I have a large cage for her and a smaller one. The smaller one is old and stained and I don’t know if it would cause more harm than good. I will definitely get her spayed. I’ve made the appointment and payed in advance to keep me from changing my mind. I know it is very good for the bunny’s health but I’m just being a worried bunny mummy.

I found a vet from the recommended list on the rabbit.org site- (http://www.rabbit.org/vets/index.html)

I wasn’t really worried about it, it was either spay or 85% chance of dying young from cancer, and I had faith that my vet knew what he was doing.

The spay went really well too, she laid it low for about a day, I gave her pain meds once a day for 3 or 4 days, and then by 7days she was good as new

I understand completely! I’m nervous for Monday ): Is her normal cage multi leveled? If it isn’t, all you have to do is take out things like hidey houses so she can’t jump on top of them for a couple days.

Thank you for the question list Bunnnyfriend. I was referred to the vet clicnic that spays and neuters the rabbits for the spca. There are not many rabbit experienced vets in my area. I called most of them and only 3 actually take them and one of those 3 won’t spay at all because she isn’t experienced enough to trust herself. Although I did ask the vet about feeding before and after and he answered the same as you posted. I think this is why I’m worried. Not many vets here are practiced with rabbits and She has so quickly become a member of our family…I just worry about losing her or causing her more pain than necessary during the healing process.

MY vet said they dont give pain meds post surgery. I asked about it after reading so many people on the forums stating they got some. They give them a final dose before discharge and if the rabbit showed sign of pain after the meds wear off in 24 hours to call.

It is good that you found a vet familiar with spaying rabbits! Hmm interesting about the med thing, my vet is going to send home a couple days of metacam. Does your vet do a pre spay check up and bloodwork (it’s good to do anyways when you first adopt a bunny so you can get a baseline)? This can help detect if your rabbit has a pre existing condition that would cause the surgery to go wrong. Wilbur goes in for her pre checkup and bloodwork tomorrow.

Actually we do not have an appointment prior to surgery. I bring her in at 8am on the first. I can pick her up in the evening. Also I just noticed the question about multi level cage, and no its single level. I’m starting to worry now… I will be calling them first thing in the morning in order to ask them all the questions I can. I researched my vet and he and his wife are both vets and have bunnies. It makes me feel a bit better.

That’s always a good sign! The cage should be fine then. Another thing good about pre spay check ups is then the vet will go over the procedure step by step and you can ask lots of questions.

I think when I ask about information regarding the procedure, I’ll have the vet who will actually be doing it, call me. Also, My bunny has been pooping around the house when shes out…will this stop after spaying? ( the poop is like marking I think)…she poops one or two then walks and poops again…looks around and continues.

Yes, bunnies forget their litter box habits when they reach maturity. You will have to retrain her after she’s recovered from her spay but she should be fine then. Hormones can take about a month to fully be absent.

Practice syringe/tube feeding now. That’s a skill you’re going to need to adminster pain meds.

If your vet doesn’t give pain meds, make sure you don’t get it done where the 2nd day falls on a weekend when they are closed. Females are usually in quite a lot of pain first two days. My vet only gives one day of metacam, but we requested a second dose and he let us have it just in case she needed it. She didn’t though, she was eating by day 2 and by day 3 she wanted to do binkies and we had to try to keep her from jumping around too much. lol

Keep the area super clean (clean out the litter box with vinegar before she comes home) and keep her comfortable, buy her favorite treats to tempt her to eat and she should be fine.

Stickerbunny, that is a very good idea. I’ll be sure to completely clean and disinfect the cage and anything she needs beforehand.

Hmm my vet gives 4 days of pain meds, is that unusual? Another thing about favorite treats, you should bring them to your vet so they can give them to her when she wakes up. The sooner she starts eating, the better.

Will do. I’ll be sure to ask for an extra dose of meds in case.

Honestly, Ms-Read-A-Lot I’m quite surprised and dismayed that your doc doesn’t give pain meds for after surgery. Of course they will be in pain for several days (you ever had surgery?). Bunnies hide their pain very well, they have to they’re prey animals, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t hurting. Definitly ask for more pain meds, at least 3 days worth.

Good luck with the surgery. She’ll do fine. It’s a stressful couple of days, but it’ll go fast.

Metacam is the typical pain killer for rabbits. Maybe someone else could remind me of the dosage because I don’t remember.

What I got was metacam as well, honestly I don’t remember the dosage either though, was a long time ago! The metacam I got lasted for a day per dose. I know a few members recently had their buns fixed and the vets used a pain med they said would last 3 days and didn’t get any sent home with them though, but not sure what medication that was.

I got Rimadyl. I kind of liked it because it was a powder not a liquid. I would just put a pinch on a piece of wet lettuce and Rosy gobbled it up. It was a once-a-day med like Metacam. I would give it to her in the evening because they are more active then and I knew the pain would bother her more. I’m sure your doc will do the Metacam. He/she will let you know what dosage she needs and how to administer.
