Hi!  I am a new forum-er and a new rabbit owner!  I just recently rescued a researched lab new zealand white from my school.  I named her Tipsy cause of her silly binkys hehe.  Anyways, the lab had her drinking out of plastic bowls and she loves to just tip them over in her enclosure when I am in class so I decided to get her a water bottle.  She knows where it is, but I dont think she knows what it is.  She normally tanks on water but she hasnt touched it since I bought it which was about half an hour ago (she normally has been to her water bowl about 3 times by now).  So I am just wondering, will she be able to figure it out?  Should I keep her water bowl out here just in case instead of having her go cold turkey?

        Thanks!

By cold turkey, do you mean no water at all?

I would just find a very heavy bowl and fill it with water. Most rabbits prefer a water bowl over a water bottle, as water bottles can be  noisy, leaky, and can make a rabbit drink less water.

Oh no, I just removed her bowl and put the bottle in place… just cold turkey from her bowl. She did explore the nozzle and played with it with her teeth and figured out water came out… I guess she is figuring out the finesse of it.

I would keep her with the water bowl, get a heavier ceramic bowl and you shouldn’t have the tipping problem.

Rabbits usually drink better with a bowl. A lot of the times they have trouble with water bottles, they can’t get as much.

Agreed, most bunnies seem to prefer bowls. I would either get a heavy ceramic one she can’t move, or a bowl you can clip to the side of a cage/xpen wall.

Are there ones you can actually clip? Cause the bowl I have hangs on the side of the bars but she really enjoys running with her bowl and is incredibly smart to have figured out that bringing it up and over is enough to get it off.

Yes, there are bowls that are made so you can securely attach to the cage bars that will stay in place.

One bolt-lock clamp cage bowl is this one from Drs Foster & Smith:

                          http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=17259

It clamp-locks with a bolt onto the cage or pen and can’t be moved until you unscrew it. And it’s nice stainless steel – more sanitary than plastic.

She’s a beauty! If you get a very heavy water bowl (look in the dogs department) she probably won’t be able to tip it or carry it in her mouth.

Try encouraging her to play with something else too other than her bowl. Silly rabbit :~)
