I’m moving to europe and want to bring my rabbit, but we will be traveling alot so she would have to be watched by some else  while we’re gone, should i still bring her?

I guess that depends. Do you have a friend who is experienced in rabbits that would watch her? Which part of Europe, as the quarantine laws vary country by country? How long will you be traveling too much to watch her?

How much is “traveling a lot”? Do you have someone in mind that will be able to watch her? What’s your plan if you bring her? What’s your plan if you don’t?

Generally it’s a good idea to bring your bunny with you when you relocate, since it’s very hard on them to separate from their human bond and you need to find a new home. I would check out what and who is available long distance as you prepare to move. I would start with the most likely local vet and ask if they do boarding or can recommend someone who will care for your bunny while you travel. You can access international vets by the listings on House Rabbit Society, http://www.rabbit.org, that has vets according to location.

I think if you are dedicated to your bunny this would be a no-brainer, hands-down, “my bunny goes where I go” answer.

But sometimes, and especially at younger ages where parents make all the rules, giving your bun the best care and proper attention, might not be accomplished as easily. If your situation will leave your bunny lonely for long periods of time or even put her health at risk for being unable to give her food or water I would definitely try to find her a home that could do those things for her. A rabbit adoption agency shelter can help with this… because it’s important that whoever owns a rabbit has the time and dedication to them. That would also help you to not have to worry about her while you are traveling. of course I could be way off in the left field here and assuming wrongly (maybe I have the wrong impression). If I am way off then I would go with what Pam suggests – find help – it’s out there – and a great place to start is at the links she provided, and with people you trust who would take very well care for a bunny.

I also wanted to mention that traveling via air is very hard on animals, especially bunnies because they are in the cargo area at times and those areas are lower on oxygen and very, very cold.

Please let us know a little more details so we can try to help

If you are moving, and there isn’t a quarantine period I would bring her. Quarantine is VERY hard on pets, so if that is involved I would work with a shelter and rehome her.
You would also have to ensure you could have her with you in the cabin of the airplane. But certainly if there is no quarantine she could move with you. Just going to school and some site seeing should be just fine Do you know when you are moving?

I would phone the embassy and airports to get info on the quarantine. Welcome by the way!

Germany has relaxed quarantine laws, last I checked – but call and check to make sure, I believe the quarantine they do require is allowed to be done at home. If you’re just going to be away on summers and weekends, you could board her or hire a pet sitter, if your parents would allow (check with them that it’s OK first). Germany has pet stores and such, so I wouldn’t think finding food would be difficult – the specific brands may be different, but they should have rabbit food. And Germany has horses of course, so hay has to be available.

I did a google search and it brought up two posts made previously on this forum about moving to Germany with a bunny. I’m linking them just in case there’s something helpful for you in there:

You definitly need to talk to your parents and see what can be done for Nala when you’re on vacation. She can’t be left alone. Finding food and hay will most likely not be an issue. You could email/contact the House Rabbit Society and see if they have any information that you could use after you move. Food, Vets, etc… The more research you do and have to show your parents the more responsible you will look to them and that’s something I always found helpful when discussing/negotiating with my parents.

                          Good Luck!

                              Nalabunny,

You can’t neglect your bunny. She needs to be fed and watered every day or she will die, and her cage needs to be cleaned. If she will be left alone for more than a day and there is nothing you can do about this, it would be best to find a good home for her.

I suggest this because if you left her alone for a week or more as you say you will have to, you may come home to find her dead. That would be horrible.

                              Let us know what happens…

Would your parents be willing to let you work extra chores etc to pay off the cost of a pet sitter? You can leave a few days food / water at a time, securing it from spilling and adding backups just in case, but over a week is way too long without someone to check in on her. If your parents were on board with keeping her, you could probably do it even with the move, but without your parents help in getting her care while you are away… I don’t know if there is much you can do beyond finding her a good house bunny home before you move. Too many things can go wrong with a rabbit being alone that long, especially if it’s going to be a common thing.

She can’t be left alone for a week at a time.

My best advice would be to set aside some time to really talk to them about it (so that you have their undivided attention). Organize your thoughts and explain to them why it is important for you to bring your rabbit along. Tell them what you are willing to do (extra chores, get better grades, etc…). Do some research and address their concerns as best you can. If you can’t get your parents to compromise on finding someone to look in on her while you’re away on longer vacations then the only responsible thing to do is to find her a new home before you move.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Maybe you’ve already checked, but is Germany a country that requires rabbits be vacinated?  And what about vet care while in Germany?  I hope everything works out.

Have you figured out what you’re going to do with Nala while you’re gone? I wouldn’t leave a bunny alone without someone to check in on her for more than a day. Even if you do leave out extra food bunnies don’t know how to parcel it out so it lasts a couple days, they just eat when they’re hungry. And litter boxes need to be cleaned.
