Hey Ive gathered up a few pinecones for Bunny but they seem to have small sharp pointy spikes on each of the, well i dont know what they are, but maybe described as the ‘leafs’ of the pinecone lol.  Im sure you will know what I mean.  Im curious, is this safe for him?

Not sure if that kind is safe but I do know that you have to dry them out completely before you give them to your rabbit.

That’s probably best. I’m always hesitant to feed my bunnies stuff from outside because you never know if it has come into contact with pesticides or anything else that could be harmful. Also, if you do buy them, make sure you buy the ones that are meant for animals or are plain. A lot of places sell pine cones (especially this time of year) that are for decorative purposes and they could have harmful things on them also.

For birds you’re supposed to bake them to remove bacteria / mold / bugs, probably same for bunnies. But if you don’t know for sure that there weren’t any pesticides, probably safest not to use them. And no idea what types are safe for buns, I just give my pair willow for stuff to chew to pieces.

The way you clean them for birds is to bake them at 225F for 20 minutes and leave them out an additional 2 hours to dry. Baking supposedly removes as much of the dangerous stuff as you can get off them.

I wonder if baking removes the sap residue?
