Hello, I just posted in the Intro subforum, but I had a few questions regarding our foster bunnies.

        1. How old do they appear to be? I posted links to the photos there, but here’s a quick photo of one of them showing their relative size

        2. When do they stop being so messy and start using their litterbox regularly? I’m not complaining, they’ve actually done a really good job about peeing and pooing in the litterbox from watching mama…but there are still accidents and I swear they are CONSTANTLY pooping in their cage, especially while munching away.

        3. What’s the best way to make bunnies friendly and enjoy humane company? I’ve been trying to hold them multiple times a day since they’re easy to pick up right now. They don’t enjoy being picked up, but they all tolerate me holding them for 5-10 minutes at a time. They also love roaming the “bunny room”.

        Thanks in advance!

          Wecome They are very sweet!

A rough guess of age…maybe 5-6wks? Can’t really say. Have you weighed them? Getting an idea of that and how much their gaining might help you estimate their age better. You said you think they might be NZ whites (highly likely btw) so researching that breed and what weights kits should be a certain ages could help.  Was the Mama and litter delievered to the Humane Society or collected by them?

I noticed in the pics in your intro thread that you have a roller hay rack. I’d suggest hanging that over where the litterbox is. Even going bigger with the litterbox and putting the bowl of pellets in there.
Keeping the hay where the litter is should help contain the poop factor because as you have noted, they poop while munching away.

On socialising, holding them is good in short spurts as you’re doing. Maybe do it while sitting on the floor with them so they don’t feel up too high. Generally hanging out down at their level is a good thing. Let them approach you etc.

Thanks! Yeah that’s what I’m thinking age-wise. I haven’t tried weighing them, but when we picked them up at the shelter (they weren’t delivered there) they said that they were 3 weeks old. I think they might have been off a week or two. I just wanted to know because one of them is a boy, so I’ll need to return him once he’s sexually mature .

I’ll try that with the food bowl in the litter box, that’s a great idea! Problem is I don’t know if I’ll find anything bigger than that. What I’m using right now is actually a lid from a container thing, and when I first put the actual container in there it was too high and the babies just peed outside of it. I’ll look around when I go shopping though. There’s another hay container sitting in the litter box as well (a suet container), which they like to munch on .

And one more question, we’ve started letting them roam the room now that they’re settled in, but they tend to piddle outside of the litter box. Any way to decrease the chances of this happening? I just have no idea where they’re going to decide to go so I don’t know where to put their litter box.

Baby bunnies have messy messy litter habits. I’m glad that you are doing it early I would clean up the pee, and if any poos are left outside the litter box, to toss the poos in the box.

Boys can be matured very early – around 3 months of age.

Alright, I’ll be prepared then! If I’m estimating they’re about 5 weeks old, that means Peter needs to go back at the beginning of December. Mama’s due to be fixed in 1 week, but when will the girls be sexually mature?

its not common, but girls can mature that early as well. 6 months old is when you will want them spayed, but they are “capable” before that.

Oh ok, so will I need to return Peter then? I’ll only have them until they are around 3-3.5 months old.
