I was trying to think of what kind of litter to use and I thought of crushing up wood stove pellets but I am unsure of how to crush them. I used whole wood pellets for my last rabbit for a little bit but it was hard to scoop the litter box and smelled bad so I don’t want to do that again.

I have to wonder if the crushed pellets would work as well as the pellet.  The compressed pellets soak up the moisture (which then ends up expanding an looking like sawdust).  If it’s already in a crushed form, will it soak it up as well when it is in that form?   I have no idea, but just wondering about this.

Why would you crush them? They turn to sawdust when the rabbit urinates on them. I’ve never had a problem with odor w/my pelleted litter. I think for as cheap as it is, you are better off throwing out the old and putting in fresh more often. It’s not meant to be scooped out.

When I change my rabbit’s litter box, I put the box into a plastic bag and dump the contents. No need to scoop at all.

I do the same thing as you Lovechacha.

We use two litterboxes, and those get cleaned out every 3rd day. Some people dump out the boxes more frequently, but with our buns, every 3rd day is good. I don’t scoop litter b/c I don’t feel it’s necessary. The WSP are very absorbent, mask odor well, and even on the 3rd day, the surface of the pellets/sawdust is dry to the touch.

Try using the WSP with your new rabbit and see how it works. Maybe replacing more frequently will help.

I scooped out the litter box 2-4 times a day because my cats would use it too.

I don’t have cats, but I don’t think it’s safe for them to be using the same litterbox.  I’m going to send this to the other forum leaders who have more experience with cats and see what they say.  You need to find a way to keep the cats out of the rabbit litterbox.

                        I found this
                        https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/15431/Default.aspx

I’d just try to use different litters so the cats will know the difference.

Here’s a quote from a thread from last year. (Quoting Elrhowen)
“I would try to come up with a solution where the bunnies can’t get into the cat boxes – cat poop can carry some very nasty parasites/bacteria that could make the bunnies very sick. You could set up a barrier around the cat boxes that the cats could easily jump, but the bunnies couldn’t. It would probably be harder to keep the cats out of the bunny boxes though.”
