        Hi there when i rescued my female sunshine they told me she was an american sable i rescued her from a rescue group. I have been reading books and in the books they say that american sables should weigh 9lbs for a female she weighs 6lbs. Should she weigh more I have had her to the vet and she said she is perfect and fine. I am just wondering why she doesn’t weigh 9lbs? She gets 1/3 cup of pellets once a day and unlimited amount of timmy hay and 2 cups of fresh veggies a night and treats on occassions. Thanks

          Couple of different reasons:

          1. Those weights are standards for show animals;
          2. Most rescues can only guess the breed of the rabbit they get in;
          3. She is most likely a mix.

            ok because I have read what they say american sables are and she does fit some of what they talk about. The rescue group did tell me she was abused and when she came there she had to stay outside till she got use to being inside. But when i checked her microchip she wasn’t microchiped to the rescue group so who knows if the rescue group is on the up and up. thanks for the help

              American sables are a pretty rare breed – often shelters are unable to identify a bunny’s true breed, so they just pick one that looks close even if it’s not likely. Chances are she’s a mix, which would explain why she’s not meeting a breed standard for weight.

                  I don’t have an American Sable, but a dwarf. True dwarfs tend to be 2.5 pounds or less.. I have a false dwarf – non dwarf like qualities. She is about 4 pounds. Not all rabbits will live up to their breed standard
