I noticed August has not been eating all of her cecals. I find them in the bunny room and occasionally in her litterbox. What might be causing this and what can I do? Her appetite and water intake are good and she’s a little poo factory. 🙂

This may be a sign that she is producing too many, which can result from too much protein in the diet. What do you feed her?

Agreed, her diet may be too rich.

She gets unlimited orchard grass hay, about 1/8 cup of Oxbow Timothy pellets and about a cup and a half of spring mix per day. My other bun has been on the same diet since we got him a year ago and he has been fine. We adopted August about 2 and a half weeks ago, I wonder if it has to do with her change in diet from the Humane Society. They were feeding her a heap of junk food pellets, some Timothy hay in a toilet paper tube, and I don’t think sh was getting any veggies. I started her slow on the veggies and switched her over to the Oxbow pellets gradually. The only thing I wasn’t able to switch gradually was the hay.

Then it probably does have to do with the change, changes in diet aren’t easy on rabbits. It sounds like you’ve got her on a good diet now though! One of my rabbits came to me from a household who rarely fed him hay and he only got broccoli stalks once in a great while, I had problems with cecals and runny poos for a while, even though I took it really slow.

I just checked her litterbox after cleaning it this morning and there is a HUGE cluster of cecals in there. 🙁 Does this issue warrant a call to the vet? Or should I adjust her diet again?

A call to the vet might not be a bad idea, the only reason I didn’t was because my rabbit came with a list of instructions from the shelter’s vet and the lady who fostered him explained his situation.

The change is most likely causing it. Changes in diet need to be made very slowly. All this new stuff is hard on her tummy.

Out of curiosity what was the list of instructions as far as diet went?  How long has your bunny been on the healthier diet?

Man, I thought I had switched her slowly enough, but now that I look back I realize that there were a lot of new things for her. I’m going to call my vet in the morning to see how I should proceed from here. I don’t want to make more changes to upset her digestion any further. Poor little August! At least her actual poos have been a normal consistency.

BB: The instructions listed what veggies to introduce (and what amount) in some sort of order. Buy different kinds of hay and place it all over to encourage him to eat it. How to give this medicine (I forget what it was called) if his stools were runny for a day. And how to gradually switch his pellets over. He was on the diet for a couple months before he passed away from cancer. He once in a while would still have runny stools and I’m not sure if that was due to his past diet or his sickness.

oh bunnnyfriend, I’m sorry, I got mixed up with who was the OP. My head was in the clouds or something. Anyway, sounds like you received good instructions to avoid potential transition issue. Wish more shelters/vets did that.

Roxy, keep us updated. How are things now.

                                Hi everyone,

My vet said the same that you all have said here, that her cecals were probably being caused by the change in diet. She said to keep an eye on her and to take it slower with new foods but that if her poops were normal in consistency and volume and her pee is normal that she should be okay. August has not had any mushy poo or diarrhea and her pee has been what seems to be her normal volume.

I also learned that my husband has been sneaking her treats to try to win her affection (they get a small bit of banana chip from time to time). I told him no treats at all for a few days and I haven’t found any cecals yesterday or today so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

                                  Haha good to hear!

Time for your husband to sneak you some treats and win your affections instead.

Lol, BB! I agree! As for August, I am on the way to the vet’s to pick up probiotics for her little tummy. I’m still seeing cecals in the litterbox even though the clusters are smaller. My vet wanted to try the probiotics rather than switch her diet again. I’ll keep you all posted!
