I have two cats who are TERRIFIED of my rabbit. Wilbur hasn’t lunged or bitten them but she’ll hop up to them and they freak out! Luna, my labrador retriever, has never shown any interest in herding/chasing after another animal in her entire life. Actually she basically watches over the smaller animals, when my sister and I had guineapigs they had escaped from their pen and she got us and led us to them. She’s turning 12 this fall and doesn’t really seem to even notice Wilbur haha. Oh and one of our cats new habbits is rubbing up against the dog meowing causing her to bark when they are begging for food. It’s like he’s egging her on ahah. I want to allow Wilbur free roam of the house soon if it can be safe. Any suggestions?

Note: cats are not declawed but I clip them

When I was getting my cats used to Penelope, I would give them treats on my bed while Penelope was there also. Distract them so they wouldn’t get nervous and get used to being around her.

I had a similar situation with my housemate’s cat and Remmy. He was afraid of the cat at first but when he stopped and kept trying to say hello, the cat ran away! I found that in the end the cat’s curiosity about Remmy won him over. He never got to the point where he could let Remmy get too close for very long (he recently passed away) but he would get sneak in and watch Remmy (until Remmy eventually chased him out, which he really seemed to enjoy, poor cat). I found that what helped the most was giving the cat a lot of positive reassurance, petting him and talking calmly so he wouldn’t be scared.

Hmm yeah I’d like to at least get them to the point where they can just ignore each other ;P

Depends on the cat. I had two cats, my cat Misha (now dead RIP) used to swat at the bunny occasionally… she never got him, but I always had to keep an eye out. My other cat Pepino HATES the rabbit and simply won’t get used to him. He’s out the majority of the day when we’re awake and she’s always hiding from him. All he does is lunge and chase her, sometimes being territorial but sometimes I think he just wants to play… she’s not into it

My kitty wasn’t with us anymore by the time the buns came around. He did coexist with two chinchillas though. He tolerated them as long as they didn’t pester him. Sometimes they would be trying to sniff him and nibble on him. In that case, he would usually get mad and take off to somewhere they couldn’t reach him. I really think it depends on the cat. My kitty was such a sweetie and he didn’t have a strong hunting instinct. He would play with the dog, although I don’t know if she really appreciated his “playfulness”. It’s funny how he would do stuff to her, but then be put off by the chinchillas’ advances.

Great idea to feed them together to ease tension

I would be worried about swatting with claws out, as well as the bunny hurting the cats-So I’d supervise closely. Also they have those plastic tips you can glue onto the cats nails and those would be perfect to protect Wilbur from a scratch. I would think a scratch from a cat is very serious since their claws are so dirty (why you get red if they scratch you) so the tips (soft paws) would be perfect.
