Mr. Bun-Bun got his abscess on his foot cleaned out by the vet and is taking Baytril for 6 more days. He also got Gentocin topical spray to be used twice daily. Obviously Gentocin must be safe for them if it’s always prescribed to rabbits, but I can’t keep it on for more than 30 seconds before Mr. Bun-Bun licks it off his foot. No matter how much I try to distract him, he cleans his foot as quickly as possible. Is it dangerous to ingest? Should I spray it on and try to hold him while it air-dries, or dab it with a clean cotton pad or something? How effective is it if rabbits immediately remove it from their body?

Just wondering, thanks for any input.

I’m not familiar with this medicaiton so I had too look it up and it said to avoid ingestion of it.

I think I would try to hold him while it air dries – I know he’ll hate it, but maybe you can bundle him up in a bunny burrito while it dries and he may not struggle so much.

          Vibes to Mr. Bun-Bun

            Thanks, I’ll try that!

He’s going to be mad at us until his treatment is completed. Yesterday when we took the pet carrier down for the vet visit, he immediately hid under the bed, thumped at us, and wouldn’t come out. We had to drag him out. Now after his ordeal, instead of running to his door for cuddles he hides in the corner when I open his condo door.

I know it’s temporary, we just have to deal with bunny attitude until his medication is done.

LOL – he’ll get over it, I promise. I have a rabbit that I give pain meds too every day and he’s quite a rascal about it too. He unfortunately is not the forgiving type – I suspect it’s because he’s in pain but he’s always been a bit of a grump.

Hopefully Mr. Bun-Bun will heal quickly and will be back to his lively happy little self.

If your adventurous you could try a cone? They sell them at clinics but also pet stores, you can cut to size and just have him wear it for a while after it’s on?

Ahhh, a cone would be hilarious! I think Bun-Bun would lose his mind!
Although he hates being held, once you force him to for longer than a few minutes he calms down. My fiance loves holding the bunny so it was his job to hold him against his will for about 5 minutes while the medicine dried. Bun-Bun panics initially and then kind of gives up (but will still eat raisins in that position, haha.) It worked today, the medicine dried and I didn’t see him cleaning his foot anytime soon after that.
He is slightly less annoyed with us, maybe because we gave him a bunch of willow leaves and branches
