I know it was on this forum, but for the life of me I cannot find it. We ran out of Barley Biscuits (this is a major travesty in our house, my trio is so mad at me!) and cannot get some for another week or so. I want to make some homemade biscuits, can you please share your favorite recipe?

Recipe from the House Rabbit Society, Wilbur loves them and they’re easy to make (:

          Brenda’s Homemade Bunny Biscuits

          1 small carrot, pureed
1/2 banana, mashed until really creamy
          1 tbsp honey
1/4 cup rabbit pellets, ground finely in a coffee grinder
1/4 cup ground oats, ground finely in a coffee grinder

Mix pureed carrot, banana and honey in a medium bowl. Add pellet powder and ground oats. Mix until blended. Knead in your hands for 1-2 minutes. Roll out the “dough” in 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick layers between sheets of plastic wrap. Cut into small cookies (about 3/4 inch across). Place cut shapes onto a parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes (check to make sure they are not browning too much). Turn off the heat and let the cookies sit in the warm oven for an hour or so.

Brenda adds: Next time, I am going to try finely ground rolled oats in place of the flour. I am sure that lots of other changes could be made, and these would still work. For example you could replace the carrot with apple or pear.

I’ve used soaked hay pellets, their normal feed pellet dust or soaked feed pellets, ground oats and some banana for flavour and to bind. I also used some mashed pumpkin one time and that worked well. You could get chaff and grind that down further to make up the bulk.
I use a low to moderate oven temp and then bake for longer. Mind you, I’ve only made them a few times and it changes each time. I think there’s a link in the FAQ’s to some recipes. Also try a forum search if you like.

You could do a version of the barley biscuits using soaked tim pellet, barley flour and some baby food fruit purees. I always to bulk mine out with more fibre though when having fruit or sugars in things. Using things like hay pellets or hay fines helps add that.

I find that any combination of mushed pellets, finely chopped fruit, and fruit juice works pretty well actually. Just play around with it…no need to follow a set recipe. One thing though – a lot of the recipes call for ground pellets, which I found next to impossible. It’s amazing how bunny teeth can get through those pellets…those things are so darn hard! Instead, I just put pellets in a small bowl and added water bit by bit while working it…the moment the pellets are moistened, they start to come apart and you’ve got yourself slightly damp fine pellet mush. A lot less work than trying to grind pellets!

This looks awesome! So here’s the million dollar question:

The boyfriend is slowly converting into a full fledged bunny slave, but he will never let me live it down if I make Sophie cookies and don’t make any for him. I hate buying two sets of ingredients though. Any thoughts on what to add to modify this into a nutritious cookie/bar a man might eat?

Why modify? Just tell him the cookies were a labor of love and good for him too!  (totally kidding!)
