        Hi Everyone!

I have had my rabbit, Prince Caspian, for about a month now. He is a black Holland Lop and is about 4 months old. The poor little guy has been itching to the point where he is losing hair behind his ears. I took him to the vet where he got various skin tests done. The vet did not find anything wrong with him (no mites, ringworm, or fleas). The vet visit cost me $200 and I really can’t afford to take my little guy back, especially since they haven’t found anything wrong. He is an indoor bunny and carefresh is the bedding I use.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong with him? Maybe allergies? Similar experiences?

Are there any anti itching creams or over the counter children’s medicines I can try?

I am a new bunny owner & any help is greatly appreciated!

If it was irritated when you took him to the vet, I’m surprised the vet didn’t offer something to help. It’s possible for rabbits to have allergies, but I have no experience with it. There are a lot of possible triggers.

It’s not unusual for the hair behind the ears to be more sparse, especially with lops. Is it just thinner there or coming out in clumps leaving bald patches? Rabbits do also scratch at the ear area a lot as that’s how they groom there. Scratch, then lick the hind foot, then repeat.

How did the vet test for mites? Just a visual inspection or checking fur and/or skin under microscope?

              How about an ear culture?

My Mimzy has very thin fur on the backs of his ears also. He does a lot of scratching and washing of his ears.
I often wonder if humidity, or lack of (and static electricity possibly being a factor) might have something to do with itchy loppy ears? Especially when there are no other obvious causes.
That does seem to be a pretty hefty charge for just an ear workup. O_o
I love your bunny’s name! (I’m a big Narnia fan) Do you have any pix of him to post, perhaps?

Food can REALLY be a nig factor when it comes to skin issues/sensitivities. What kind of pellets/hay/veggies? Do you have brand names because sometimes that can help rather than just “a timothy based pellet”.

Maybe he’s just neurotic or something. Lol.

That’s so true too. Please post his diet and we could perhaps recommend back to basics to eliminate the source of allergy (with vet help/guidance) but certainly animals get neurotic behaviors…In fact 1/2 the videos I see on AFV that are ‘funny animals’ are neurotic behaviours -so it does happen.

Here’s a neurotic cat… overgrooming. Although we have *no* idea how he was able to match those lines up so perfectly. In his case, he would just sit and PICK his fur out. Do you see tufts of hair on the ground at all? Do you notice that he’s itching at a particular time, ie when you are about to leave/have left (coming home to hair all over cage especially).. Any pets around that could cause anxiety? With this particular cat, it ended up being a combination of diet and anxiety issues… He would pick often when my parents went out of town and he was left at home alone for most of the day (they had a pet sitter come twice a day, but that didn’t seem to help). As you can kinda tell in the picture, his skin is not red and it wasn’t flaky. He had been to the vet multiple times and had tests done and NOTHING came back. Changing around his diet seemed to help in that his fur became much thicker and healthier looking, but we’d still catch him pulling hair out on accasion. This isn’t necessarily what it is, so I don’t want to freak you out. Lol. Can you think of ANYTHING, even something that seems totally mundane, that might be freaking him out?
