My new foster bun spends a lot of the time that he’s in his cage digging/moving things around. I thought he was just working on an interior decorating project, but upon closer inspection I realized he’s actually hiding food. I know that whether or not he’s actually going to get something to eat (let alone species-appropriate food, grrrrrr) has always been kind of hit or miss for the poor little guy, so I don’t blame him, but I’m wondering if this is normal. Is it instinctual, or is he doing it out of fear he’ll be left without food again? And if that’s more likely the case, what can I do to reassure him?

Is it hay that he is hiding?

And are you sure he is a he? If it is hay that he is tucking away, away in a box or a hidey place, he could in fact be a she that is experiencing a hopefully false pregnancy.

Neutering would be a good start for this little foster bun

Monkeybun, it’s hay, pellets, even a little carrot. Bunny just got here Wednesday night and has been very very shy, so I hadn’t inspected the family jewels yet….. OMG. She’s a girl!!! She hasn’t been around any other rabbits – she ‘met’ my Harvey but she was in her cage at the time… any pregnancy is definately false. I’m so glad I didn’t introduce them!

Careful of them even meeting through cage bars, they have been known to Do the Deed through them as well.

I’m sure you’re right about the hoarding for fear of being hungry. Also, bunnies graze, unlike dogs that gobble up all food at once. They like to eat throughout the day and night, so with another bunny in your house, it seems like she’s making sure she has hers for later.

So nice of you to take her in. Keep those cages at least 2″ apart as MonkeyBun suggested.
