So you are probably already on to where this is going.  I was wondering if there was some option to help mitigate the urine stained feet.  Is this something thats just common with pet rabbits?  I don’t believe I’m doing anything wrong, maybe because he has white hair and its more noticeable.  Maybe because he is still young and likes to play in his litter.

So, I’m here to find out what I can do.  i use yesterdays news unscented in a decent sized litter box, and i fill up enough to cover the bottom, then i tilt it so it all piles in the back.   (I seen him moving it all a couple times so I figured I’d help him out lol.)  Anyhow, whats the verdict?

I have had two rabbits with white feet who have had this problem. I *think* what you’re seeing might be normal discoloring, like how if you walk around wearing white socks after a while the bottoms will become discolored, anyways that’s the conclusion I’ve come to with my own rabbit. I also use Yesterday’s News as a litter and my rabbit is young, but the older rabbit I had still had discolored feet. When I first got my current bunny she wasn’t litterbox trained so for the first couple of days she would pee on the floor of her cage and step into it. As soon as I noticed it I would wash her feet but her feet would look a different color/shade than it does now that she is trained and isn’t stepping into her urine. Sorry if this doesn’t help!

lol, bummer. I was hoping not to have a bunny for the rest of his life with obvious urine stained feet. Maybe I will get some yellow food coloring and fade his feet to his fur so it looks like he just has a unique color >:-)

Yellow stains are not normal. This means that the urine is not being absorbed in the litter effectively enough, or as mentioned, the rabbit is peeing outside the box and stepping in it. Both of my rabbits have white fur and neither have yellow feet. Max did when he was first adopted, but after a few months of a proper habitat and absorbent litter, the fur grew out and it was never an issue again. Yesterdays News isn’t very absorbent… what else have you tried?

Nothing. I could try using carefresh I suppose.

I use yesterday’s news and neither of my buns (both with white feet) have stain issues. But, they are quite neat in their litter habits (use one corner). Some people put a layer over the litter of hay, or straw, or paper to help keep the urine away from fur… never had to do it, but the people I know who do say it works well. You could also try a screened litter tray, like they have in the BB store to keep the bun off soiled litter.

I guess its just one of those things, different for each.

I have a rabbit with white feet too and he has this problem when I first got him but it went away quickly. I actually use wood stove pellets with a very light layer of carefresh on top. Carefresh is ridiculously expensive, but I can get 2 months out of a big bag this way. I also have two litter boxes. It’s cut down on cost considerably rather than using ONLY carefresh.

In my opinion, the wood pellets are the best for absorption. When wet, they break down into a dry sawdust but it doesn’t stick to the rabbit at all. Wet hay in a box can cause green staining, and any colored litters can leave stains too.

Cottons feet were yellow when I got her- typical pet store poor housing. Now her feet are sometimes tinted more of a light green from the hay. Which is fine with me as it is not stinky or dirty and a sign that she likes to chill in her box and munch on hay.

Wilbur’s feet aren’t yellow, just slightly off color (grayish). Is that a urine problem still then? Because I never see litter that has urine on it on the surface.

This is what her feet look like:

is that normal? Or is it a problem with the litter? I feel horrible.

If a certain rabbit of mine would quit throwing her litter out of the box, then walking/laying in it, her feet would be a lot less yellow.

I have this problem with Leopold. He insists on sitting in his poop. I swear, that litter box is his favorite place to sit. He sits in it so much that he often times won’t get out of the way when Wooly wants to use it.

Leo does this too!  I joke around and say he’s sitting on the toliet reading playbunny magazines.  When we first brought him home (with his dirty litterbox) he spent the first three days on it until I finally had to take it away to clean.
