My mini rex rabbit, Hopscotch, sometimes growls. If he is eating and you put your hand in his cage he will sometimes growl at me. It’s kind of weird and it started when he was about 6 months old.

That isn’t abnormal – he’s getting hormonal so you may start seeing more territorial behaviors from him until he is neutered.

He is already neutered and it started after I got him neutered. He is really friendly though and he doesn’t growl very often, it just really confuses me when he does.

I think he is just letting you know it’s HIS food and to BACK OFF! lol

Lolli growls whenever I give her food too. lol Lolli has never got aggressive with me, but I just give her some space and leave her alone while she’s eating. Sometimes I jokingly take the growling as her thank you and tell her you’re welcome. LOL She quit growling as much after Eddie passed away but since we’ve moved in with my dad, she’s started up again. It’s so weird cause NO ONE is bothering her. Oh wait…..I guess it’s ME, still standing there. hahahaha!

Ah. If he’s neutered already, then yeah he’s just saying “my food, back off and let me eat” most likely.

Yep, it’s just a territorial response that he wants to be left alone and doesn’t want you to touch his food.

It’s also surprising because we don’t expect noises from bunnies generally, so a growl is vocalizing that not all bunnies do. My mini rex, Spockie, only grunted when he was happy.

So when I got Samantha, who growled at me at 9 weeks and it was just the cutest thing from a baby, I got used to it and just called her fierce. She still growls, and it’s at me, and it’s usually some form of disapproval (like touching her There, instead of over There), but it’s just her way.

Keep your paws off his food. Or else. Ya got that?

It also could be that YOUR hands are in HIS space.  My foster bunny, Kevin, really doesn’y like anybody in his cage (I try to clean it when he’s FAR away).  His last owner said he was mean, but I haven’t had a single problem with him.  Turns out, the guy always tried to pet Kevin when he was in his cage so he would growl and sometimes box.  He was just saying, “this is my space, get your own.”

As long as there’s no biting involved, don’t worry about it and just enjoy it for the GOOFY sound that it is!

Sometimes Remy grunts and growls when we’re playing, and it’s hilarious!
