Are they really that much better?  I’m currently using Kaytee Timothy Complete, and would love to switch since I dislike Kaytee brand.  However, no stores around here sell Oxbow, I would have to purchase through the internet.  Is it worth it to switch?  My two buns (6.5lbs each) together only get 1/4 C pellets a day.

I buy mine online. I place a large order at once (usually 4 10-pound bags), and I keep them sealed up until I need them. The food lasts me months. My local PetSmart does carry Oxbow, but they only get a few bags per week and once they’re gone, they’re gone. 9 times out of 10 when I would go in there, they would be out.

I currently use oxbow and really wouldn’t use anything else. I tried using Zupreem timmy pellets and my bunny couldn’t take them. My personel opinion oxbow is the best and there is no other pellet better. I do have a question beka i have read in books that you shouldn’t buy pellets for more than 8 weeks because they aren’t fresh?

We go thru the pellets in a timely manner once they are opened and have never had an issue.

I’ve kept mine much longer than 8 weeks as well – hardly use them and have had no problems. Usually the larger bags are better deals as well.

You can also freeze pellets if you’re concerned about freshness, but I’ve never seen a need for that.

Beka, where do you buy pellets? I’m seeing that shipping costs more than the pellets. (Sorry BB) I would switch if I can find a 10lbs bag for less than $22 (incl S&H) since thats how much I currently pay at the pet store (incl tax) for Kaytee’s. If I buy 2 bags at a time, it might work out.. but more than two, I would have them for a long long time since my buns don’t eat that much pellet.

lwayne, do you have a Petsmart near you? They now sell Oxbow pellets.

Sarita, not all of the petsmarts carry oxbow – mine doesn’t they carry the hay, but the only pellets they carry are Kaytee and Nutriphase (yuck, yuck) – they don’t carry any of the good foods for exotics though, they used to carry a natural pellet for birds but stopped because no one was buying the more expensive better brand vs the cheap *sigh*

lwayne – how much less than $22? Two 10lb bags of oxbow at dr foster and smith = $39.97 but one bag is $22.98

That’s poopy that they don’t all carry the pellets! You can go on-line at their website and they have a store locator – so check that out as well.

lwayne- Honestly, they are soooo similar. The only difference is that Kaytee has ground wheat and ground oats and the fiber is a bit less. Pellets are never a good source of fiber for rabbits, no matter what food you give. Do you feed a lot of pellets? If only 5-10% of the diet is pellets, I wouldn’t bother switching.
For the record, I do use Oxbow Organic, which my rabbits are in love with. However, neither of them did well on the Oxbow Young Bunny food or the Oxbow Adult Rabbit food.

Thanks for the tips. I did freeze the pellets once and my bun wouldn’t eat them. So i had to throw them out and by new. He is very picky and spoiled!

It’s the only one within 60 miles, there’s a petco but they don’t either! I know, it is no fun. I already drive 40m to get to the store as is (nearest pet store). They should all carry the good stuff, but sadly around here no one takes very good care of exotics so the healthy options are not carried. They only order a few bags of oat/orchard grass hays too and I always run them out of stock when I go bunny shopping. lol
