I have a question about the new Tummy Tea in the BB store. Does the tea have to be reconstituted to be used? Wouldn’t the herbs in it do just as well as a salad or hay topper for bunny? And would this be considered a sufficient substitute for simethicone and Benebac?

Also, don’t suppose people can use it too, can they? Just curious.

I’m not sure, MM, but usually it’s a good idea to use something as directed for best results.

I looked it up online as well as in the store, and I think it’s similar to some herbal teas you can already find ready for humans. My guess is that it won’t hurt you at all, but you probably have some chamomile etc. tea bags in your cupboard already.

Usually tea herbs have to be brewed to get the full effect, the heat releases whatever is stored in the herb for medicinal reasons. Not sure about the tummy tea, but probably best to use it as it says.

I did brew some for him this morning and he took about 10 of those little 1 ml syringes of it all at once. He loves it! ^_^ Can’t blame him, it smells delish!!
And he got some much needed fluid, which makes me happy. He’s been making small poos for a few days and now they have fur in them, so I need to keep him hydrated and eating.

He did have a little smear on his hutch floor a few hours afterwards, which I think means it made his cecals a little runny, but that’s to be expected I suppose. He’s eaten stuff with chamomile in it before, but not at this volume.

Still…those tiny poopies…. I went out and got him some long grasses and dandelions to tempt him to eat. Not sure if the poos are also related to the poorer quality hay he’s (sort of) eating besides slurping down Pip’s fur during bonding, but they seem more moist at any rate.

I think we’re all pretty stressed at the mo. Taking a bit of a break today from the bonding because I’m feeling off again myself and my doc told me those few weeks ago I need to tone down the anxiety. Yup, Pam, I do have those teas in my larder and I’m off to make a cuppa now.

Humans can use the tea.  The creator of the tea said it is excellent for humans actually.

As far as using it raw without brewing, I am not sure it would have the same affect, as I also thought along the lines that stickerbunny mentioned. However, I will email the herbalist that developed the tea as she would be able to give an educated answer. I am sure if she had a type of dry herb that worked the same or if the tea could just be used raw, she would have mentioned it, but it would be good to have a direct answer about it.

I do think that having the extra fluid that the tea provides is extremely beneficial as well.

I’ll post when I get an answer.

I did brew some for him and he took it perfectly until he’d had enough. I was stunned! He loved the taste apparently.

My only regret is, we didn’t use the whole 8 ounces today and I have to toss out what’s left now because they say not to keep it for more than 12 hours…I suppose I could drink it.

While we are talking about tea, has anyone used that tea for senior bunnies from the BB store? I was thinking about getting some. Stormy is still acting like a spring chick but it may be nice to have in the future.

LPT – the Old Bone Herb Mixture is not a tea – it’s just a mixture. Is that what you are talking about? I’ve given it to Mango and he likes it…does it help his old bones, not sure, but he seems to enjoy it. I just pour a bit on the floor and he eats it.

Gasp! I didn’t know there was tea in the store! Glad to see your buns love it too. I might have to pick up some!

Okay Mimz, I just got a response from the maker of the tea, and I gave her the link to this thread so she could see what’s being asked.

Here was her response to me: (she okayed me posting it here in the forum)

One could just open the tea bag and offer the dry mix to the bunny (some bunnies will eat dry mint, lemon balm and chamomile) and get  therapeutic effect, but to get the full therapeutic value for the purpose intended, the tea is the way to go.  Room temperature or slightly warm is best for digestive support.  And as you know, when a bunny isn’t feeling well they may be refusing food even if they normally would like the dry herb mix.  Plus with digestive issues hydration is very important.  Someone asked if the Tummy Tea would replace Benebac — answer is no. The action and purpose of Benebac are different.

The tea is not only delicious, but very soothing.  In addition to the digestive support it is calming and the chamomile provides a mild analgesic effect.  When one of my bunnies is in need, I tend to syringe five or so teaspoons once each hour for three times along with using gentle massage techniques.  And I generally drink some myself to help reduce the worry about my sick fur “kid.”

One last note about the tea.  Recommended shelf life for leafy herbs and flowers is generally six months.  When it gets near the six month time frame, if the tea hasn’t been needed for the bunny, I’d recommend the customer use it for themselves so it doesn’t go to waste and replace it with a new batch for bunny.

Hope this helps clarify the use of the tea.

Thanks BB, that’s what I needed to know.
BTW, yes it is DELICIOUS! ^_^

Yes, Sarita. That’s what I meant. I got confused.

                                Wow! Very cool product.
Will definitely have to buy when my next bunny comes along!
