I’ve been posting on here a lot about converting my Abby to a mostly hay diet. I’ve got to say, it’s only been a few days but she is acting like she feels better! I was just rubbing her face and behind her ears and stopped to go back to looking at the computer… she ran away and started binkying and zig zagging and shaking her head and kicking her feet out midair hahaha.  I just went to share this with my parents but they don’t really get it. I figured you guys would be a more amused audience lol. I love my bunny so much!! Oh, now she’s tired and in the “bunny loaf” formation haha.

Hooray! We always like to hear of happy, binkying bunnies here so thanks for sharing.

I just read in another thread you’re trying this hay diet in an effort for her to lose weight. (Kudos for that). I don’t know if this has been covered but do make changes in diet gradual. Often this is the case when introducing new foods into their diet but do it also when reducing foods. It’s not good for them to loose weight too quickly. Get your vet to advise on how to go about it if they haven’t already.

Oh yes, We are definitely making the change gradually. She’s still getting more pellets than she should haha. I am excited though, and apparently she is too! She definitely needs to lose the weight and I think she’s gonna be so much more happy now! 🙂

And the better she’s feeling the more she’s moving about and that will always help with the weight loss. The ol pellets are carb heavy and I suspect leave the rabbits feeling over full. Probably want to sleep all the time. Same goes for us humans with carb foods. If only I could stop!

That is awesome news. My mom doesn’t get it either. My one bunny has cancer and falls over sometimes. In a year he hasn’t been able to lay down with his back feet stretched out. I caught him doing that this week and was so excited. It is just a small mile stone for him. I am so glad to here this.

Oh my I’m so sorry to hear about your bunny’s cancer. My rabbit has had cancer too. I rescued Abby when she was still growing a little bit. I don’t know her exact age… but I came into some extra money after a fender bender. My car isn’t worth fixing up so I just kept the money and because of that I could finally afford to spay her. But anyways, she was definitely less than 3 years old and may have been less than 2 when I had her spayed. When they took her uterus out they found masses and tested it and it was cancerous. They think they got it all and they said a couple more weeks and it probably would have spread. I’m so scared that it will come back and that’s another reason I want her to get this weight off. I want her as healthy as possible.

Wow! That was really lucky you could get her spayed when you did. I was a little surprised to read she was possibly younger then 2 when they found this but then I remembered something I recently read. The dutch breed rabbit is reported to be more susceptible to uterine cancer so maybe that was a contributing factor? I assume that is Abby in your avatar picture?

That’s great! It’s so cute to think of her binkying around. I’m sure she’ll feel better with a little less weight.

And so lucky you got her spayed when you did! That’s so scary.

Yes it was very scary! I really think of it as a miracle and as fate intervening that I got rear ended that day. Without that insurance I wouldn’t have been able to get her spayed when I did and it would have been too late.

And I’ve never heard that about dutch rabbits before! It makes sense though… I know she could not have been older than 2 and a half when I got her spayed and by then masses had already formed and were on the verge of spreading! When I rescued her she was smaller and was still growing (and not just around the middle!! lol) so I know she had to be less than a year old at the time.
