I have a question, should I be putting hay in litter boxes? And if so, why? Also, is it safe for my bunnies to eat the hay they have urinated on?

Putting the hay in the litter box really helps train them to use it. They seem to like to poop alot while eating hay. Rabbits pretty much avoid eating the soiled hay if there’s plenty fresh hay to eat. Eating hay that’s just been peed on should not be harmful but eating hay that’s been soiled for days not good. It is important to take out the pee soiled hay each day. You can suspend the hay in a rack over the box if you prefer.

I agree with the above poster; I always put hay in a large litterbox.   It really helps with their litter training habits.  I’ve had two house rabbits, and both trained themselves to use the litterbox–and I think a great deal of it was that I made it easy for them to succeed.
