I am trying to train my bunny Charlie to use the litterbox in his cage. For the most of the day he is either in his play pen (with the cage bottom in it including the litter tray), or roaming freely under supervision. He never urinates or poops outside of his cage but he doesn’t seem to be getting the concept of using the litterbox exclusively. Sometimes he uses it but sometimes he doesn’t.

Any tips on how to get him to exclusivly use the litterbox instead of pooping and urinating all over the cage as well?

I have tried all the tips I have read such as giving him treats when he uses it, putting a little of his poop in the litterbox, shooing him onto the litterbox when he is about to go, and adding a second litter box. He doesn’t seem to poop in just one area either, it is all over the cage.

Any tips onto where I should go from here?

Is he neutered? Sounds like he is marking his territory.

Do you have anything on the floor of hte cage? Bedding, towels, etc? if so, take it out. It helps

              Yes he is neutered.

On the floor of the cage there is just a cage liner with some Natural Critter care bedding on top, his food dishes, and litter box

The cage liner and the bedding confuse them and make them think the entire cage is a litter box, they don’t know the difference between bedding / a liner and litter.

Stickerbunny has a point about what could be confusing.

Also, does he do pile poos in his litterbox? I am just wondering if what you are seeing around his cage is a bit of territorial marking too. Do you have other animals that he is in contact with or can get the scent of — either from the house or via your hands and clothing

If I take out the bedding won’t that be uncomfortable for him when I put him in his cage at night? The cage just is one of those ones with a plastic bottom.

he does pile poos in his letterbox, but mostly outside the litterbox. There are no other animals that we come in contact with except him.

He’ll be fine. Alot of buns prefer the smooth plastic on the floor anyway. Take out the bedding and liner

Keep us updated on how he does. In the past I’ve likened this to a person being in a room with a dozen identical toilets and then getting in trouble for “using the wrong one”. The bunny can’t tell the difference between bedding in a cage and litter in a litterbox.

Totally fixed the problem! he only uses the litterbox now! (until last week, see my other post on suddenly pooping on the couch)
