Porkie’s had dandruff before his winter to spring molt and it hasn’t ended, is there anything we can do for it?

He might have fur mites so you might want to check with your vet. I noticed my rabbit had it and i took him to the vets and he has fur mites.

I would see a vet. We live in an extremely dry climate (Ok except our epic flooding this summer…it’s usually humidity zero) and have never experienced dandruff-it’s not normal for rabbits and I doubt that’s what really is going on. It could be mites, allergies or any number of issues. That being said I don’t think treatig a skin issue woudl be very hard or costly so it would likely be an easy fix for the vet Keep us posted!

I agree dandruff is not natural in rabbits and is an indication of something else going on to cause the dry skin and flaking.

Alright, I let my sister know that it’s probably mites. Thanks everyone :]

Where is the dandruff located? What does it look like? Little dry flakes on ears/head may just be dry skin, but if little clumps of fur are coming off attached to a skin flake, or there are bare or scaley patches of dry skin (esp. on shoulder area), that sounds more like fur mites. A vet can diagnose fur mites with a skin scraping, and the treatments are easy to administer (make sure you use a rabbit-approved treatment, though, like Revolution. Some of the meds can be dangerous to bunnies.)

It’s tiny little flakes, mostly on his shoulders but small amounts on the rest of his body too, and the fur on his shoulders is slightly thinner than usual but his shedding in minimal. If it is mites, is it safe to treat with baths with Dawn dish soap?

NO! not safe at all. Baths in general are not safe for bunnies. The dish soap wouldn’t cure it if its mites anyway. She needs to see a vet.

He doesn’t mind baths and using Dawn got rid of my rat’s mites when the vet refused to sell me Revolution.

Revolution is safe for rabbits in the right dosage. So, though I don’t know about Revolution and usage on rats, I would talk to your vet again about it for your rabbit. I’ve used it on my rabbits without a problem.

It sounds like it could be fur mites, given the location and extent. I would take him to the vet to confirm the diagnosis and get a prescription of Revolution. It’s easy to apply, very effective and safe for rabbits.

Revolution is safe on rats too, in very small dosages. That entire vet office has virtually no experience in any animal that isn’t a dog and didn’t believe me that it was safe for rats so they wouldn’t sell it to me. >.>

I told my sister and her roommate that it’s probably mites and to have him checked out by a vet, so hopefully they will.

Thank you everyone for the responses!

I thought Wooly had dandruff once. Turned out to be banana (dehydrated) crumbs from Leopold eating his treat over Wooly’s back.

Revolution is prescription- so it is unlikey they would sell it to you for your rat since it is against the law to do so without seeing the rat. Dawn dishsoap will not cure mites. Is the rabbit anywhere near where the rat is/was/has ever been?

They had me bring Bella, the rat, in, free of charge, to be weighed so they could get the right doseage. I sat in the room for over an hour before they came in and told they wouldn’t sell it to me. They’re the ones that told me to use the soap intsead and something worked lol

Porkie wasn’t by Bella, but one of my sister’s rats currently has mites.
