We are going on a little trip in August (funny considering we don’t have any money right now but the trip is free so I guess it’s okay). I think we’re just going to be gone for 5 days. My in-laws have a condo for a week, but I don’t think we want to stay the entire time. Anyway, the dog is going over to my parents’ house. I asked them to watch the rabbits as well, but I’m afraid they aren’t going to get the attention they need. I had originally thought that we could just leave them here. My husband doesn’t want them running around in their room with nobody here though. Understandable. But I don’t think my parents are going to want to spend time watching them. I’ll tell them to do X,Y, and Z but I’m think they will come once a day and just throw some pellets in their dish. My husband doesn’t trust a petsitter coming here if it is someone we don’t know. We have a ton of stuff in our house. Soooooooooo I was thinking maybe the rabbits should go over to my parents house. Problem is, their cage is huge and they don’t have an exercise pen. Plus my parents’ house doesn’t have any non-carpeted surfaces (even in the kitchen). We don’t have money to spend on a bunch of stuff for 5 days. I don’t know what to do. Will the rabbits be okay in their cage for 5 days? They were in there for 2 days straight when the AC broke and boy were they POed.

I’m worried about vacation too. I’m hoping to get someone to house sit. If I can’t I may have to board her, and I’m worried about her being caged all week. Mostly I’m worried that nobody else is enslaved to the degree I am.

omg yeah don’t leave them alone for more than 12 hours!!! That could be really bad news for a bunny! I would contact your local house rabbit society, shelter, or your vet to find out if there is a good rabbit sitter or a good boarding place for your bunnies! My rabbit sitter is a ‘professional’ and was recommended by my vet and also a hrs educator. I drive over an hour to leave my bunnies with her because I know they’re safe! She charges $8/day for a pair everything included (veggies as well). Maybe you can find someone like that near you? My fancy #1 vet called countryside here costs 16/day for one rabbit but they are seperate from noise and get to run around a lot though so there’s some prices.

I had a friend stop in once a day to hang out with the buns and feed them while I was gone for a few days. They were fine.

Being stuck in a cage for a few days for vacation won’t hurt them any. They may be cranky when you get home, but they’ll be fine if someone comes in to feed/water them.

I won’t ever take my buns to someone else’s house, they are more comfortable here, and I know there is nothing in my apartment that could hurt them, like other animals or plants or kids.

I’m thinking they are just going to have to be mad and say in their cage. Like I said, my parents will probably just throw some food at them and call it good. I don’t know of any bunny sitters. Rabbits aren’t exactly popular around here. I can ask the vet though I guess. We don’t have any rabbit shelters and the local animal shelter will have like one or two bunnies every once in awhile.

It’s not going to be much of a vaction. We agreed to go before, back in May. My in-laws have a condo for a week in August so it won’t cost us anything to stay at the resort. Then we ran into our lack of money situation and told my in-laws we couldn’t go. They got mad and went on and on about not ever spending family time with them. Blah, blah, blah. So they said they would give us gas money and we said fine. I wish we could go on a real vacation.

We haven’t been on vacation in over 10 years because I don’t know what to do with our rabbits. The last time we took a vacation, we only had one rabbit and boarded him at the vet’s, in a separate room that they have for small animals, but I thought about him all the time, which really took the fun out of the vacation. We have two rabbits now, and I know that they would have each other while being boarded, but they aren’t used to being caged at all and I don’t know if that would make them go crazy and maybe even fight. They’ve had free run of the house ever since we’ve had them.

I just thought of something else. What about Wooly’s grooming? I have a hard enough time keeping up with him. I brush him the best I can whenever I get a chance (average is every other day), but he still manages to get a few mats here and there. I just cut one off of him this morning. My parents are not going to groom him and I don’t even want them to try because he won’t hold still for them. Do you think he’ll be okay not being groomed?

I’m not sure how close you are to your vet but you could call them and ask if any of the techs or assistants would be willing to pet sit on the side for a few days. One of my friends is a vet assistant and she does this a lot for the patients at her clinic. She says its pretty common for the techs/assitants to be willing to do this as extra income for them. I know your husband doesn’t want it to be a stranger but hopefully someone who works at your vet’s office would be more trustworthy. Plus you’d know that they are more accustomed to caring for buns compared to just any other pet sitter (might even be willing to do some grooming). If you’re within a decent driving distance to your vet, it might be worth inquiring about

I called my vet’s office and they said they didn’t do that. Something about the company policy. I guess I understand though. I work retail and we were told not to deliver anything to someone’s house even if they are the sweetest sounding little old lady. The company is worried about us going to some person’s house and then getting murdered or something.

So, if I groom the crap out of Wooly right before we leave, do you think he’ll be alright? Will I just need to be prepared to cut some stuff off of him when we get back?
