It goes like this. A few months ago, i left a post because i wanted to know the after-effects using a fogger on my apartment would be. Since then, i have left the topic at a standstill as things occupied my time. I have considered using more.. organic methods to pest control for the safety of both myself and my rabbits.

I am sure like the rest of you have heard about diatomaceous earth. It is organic and generally safe to use when handled properly. I am a very clean person. I do like to keep my apartment clean (Unlike my neighbors) yet because of them, i now have a roach problem. What are your experiences with diatomaceous earth? I want to kill those little buggers and keep them away however i don’t want to get me or my rabbits sick in the process. Is it truely as safe as it’s written? Is it safe around my rabbits?

According to rabbit.org, the HRS site, its perfectly safe to use. I haven’t had a pest problem, thankfully, so i have no first hand experience with it. But I take their word for it

I think that is safe as well. I would mention to the complex management about your roach problem. If your neighbors aren’t clean and have pests, you will always have this problem. Usually apartment complexes will do a quarterly pest control program.

Sadly enough, the owner of the apartment building is a penny pinching arse so the likelyhood of any type of pest control ia highly unlikely. What would be the safest method to use DE? Those little buggers seem to come from all around my apartment, not just my kitchen.

Read your lease, often there’s stuff in there about pest problems, and what they are obligated to do.

I’ve read about diatomaceous earth in my organic gardening books and magazines, but have never used it. I have wondered about using it though, because ever since we moved into this house several years ago, we have had problems with roaches from time to time. The house was rented for a few years before we got it and I think that’s when they got a foothold. The neighbors use exterminators for their houses, but I am terrified of those poisons with our rabbits having the run of the house. I searched the HRS (rabbit.org) site for info on d. e., but I didn’t find anything, so I’d like to know the best way to use it too.

Under Fleas and Mites is where they sort of talk about DE. It doesn’t say really how to use it, but its safe to use.

Diatomaceous Earth works wonders on Cockroahes, and anything with an exoskeleton. I used it heaps when I was working in pest control. Make sure you get the food grade. The food grade is 100% safe. The other version of DE is heat treated and extremely poisonous. But food grade is fine.
put it along the edges of cupboards and skirting boards etc for cockroaches. mix with water and spray on walls etc as an abrasive for flies and mosquitoes. When they clean it off their feet it kills them. Its safe but if you are using a duster dont dust near the rabbits as it will hurt their lungs. If applying straight to the floor its ok.
