My rabbit is a 3 pound 4 year old. He gets unlimited hay (mixture of oat, timothy, and blue) from the BB store. He also gets a mixture of romaine lettuce, Italian Parsley and Cilantro twice a day. I do not measure it exactly, but I think it adds up to about two to three cups total. He also gets 1/8th of a cup of Oxbow pellets-most of them at night. I keep enough out to offer them as treats during the day. His weight has not changed any since we have had him so I think the diet is right. Our vet feels he his healthy. The BB website and House Rabbit Society have suggested diets and types of foods and treats that are safe for rabbits.

What it needs depends on its age. If it is a baby, you want to be feeding alfalfa hay (under 7 months), if it is adult you want ot be feeding Timothy/Oat/Orchard. Hay should be unlimited. Pellet should be measured by weight, typically babies get more pellets than adults though since they need the extra nutrients. Pellets should be PELLET only – no seeds, no veggies, no colored bits. Just pellets.

We feed our almost-2-year-old, 4.5 lb Holland Lop about 1 Tbsp. of pellets in the morning; ~3 c. of mixed greens and veggies divided into three separate meals a day (mix of lettuce, broccoli, cilantro, parsley, brussel sprouts, etc. etc. depending on what’s in season), and unlimited hay (Timothy, Orchard, Oatgrass) kept in multiple locations in the house. He also gets a “treat” of a tiny bit of carrot, apple, or a berry about once a day.

Our previous bun (also a male Holland Lop) was fed a lot more pellets and fruit treats, and he ended up not eating enough hay and developed bad teeth problems, so we’re much more hay-centered with our bunny diet now.

What I feed my 4 lb bunny:

One tablespoon of timothy based pellets
Unlimited Orchard and Timothy Gold Hay
3-4 romaine leaves, a small handful of romaine at night

You dont want to feed too many pellets (if he is a few months to one year old, it is okay) as it causes obesity. not too many snacks, it can cause a chubby bunny. Hay is very essential to a rabbit’s diet. I suggest having unlimited hay available.
