For the last week ive been seeing some “soft stool” in my bunnies cage, he has regular feces in his litterbox but then there has been the soft stool on the cage floor, not a large amount and not liquid like but just not normal round feces.

I haven’t changed his diet or anything, nothing has changed. he seems ok he has been shedding ALOT but i think it’s just regular heavy shedding.

he just seems not as playfull lately and looks abit thiner but that could be from all the shedding.

i have stopped his veggies and just kept water and timothy hay in his cage now, but he’s still having this problem everyday.

it’s not alot but im worried since i read diarrhea is the number 2 killer of bunnies.

does anyone know what i should do, i can’t find any info online. thanks

I don’t think it’s really diarrhea – it’s very rare in rabbits and most dangerous for baby rabbits.

It’s cecal dysbiosis and it’s likely caused by diet or a possible health problem like dental, UTI or URI. So, I would recommend a trip to the vet for a thorough physical check-up.

Ditto Saritas advice. Especially if you’ve noticed a change in his physique and energy.

Sarita mentions dental and it does seem odd that teeth and soft poop could be connected but it often is the case. I read this news clipping last week that explains some of it quite well. (more in regards to cecals and coat condition.) http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/peterwedderburn/100050074/rabbit-dentistry-not-just-cosmetic/

ETA: Some rabbits eat their litter material too and that can cause some messy poop.

Did you change his diet before or after you noticed the mushy stool? You mention that you discontinued veggies.

the only thing in his diet that has changed in the last month is i started buying orchard grass and timothy hay that has carrots, mint etc mixed in with it, but since this happened i switched back to regular timothy hay, (i dont think it’s the hay) but just to be on the safe side…his energy seems back to normal now he’s running around fine, he just gets the soft poop when i give him veggies like kale and romain etc…he’s not underweight or anything, he’s still a pretty big bunny, he has just been shedding alot lately and he just looks abit smaller. i had to google cecal dysbiosis because ive never heard of it, so im making a vet appt to get him checked out. but until i see the vet i’ll just stick to hay and pellets. Thankyou for all the info

Kale and romaine are from the cabbage family, and many bunnies have trouble digesting them. Usually in the form of gas or worse.
You might try a simpler lettuce like green leaf to see if that goes down better and the poos stay firm.

Hi I’m hoping someone can help me. My bunny got out of the cage while we weren’t home and when we got home there was mushy, apple sauce like stool ALL over the house! We got him a little cleaned up, back in his house. He was very lethargic and not acting his happy self. He’s drinking water now but we’ve only seen him eat 2-3 pieces of hay since. What do we do? Do you think it was just because he was stressed? There is no sign of him eating something bad when he got out. Not sure what else could have caused it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Keao, please start a new thread with the same content! This thread is old and we ask members not to post in old threads. You have a much higher chance of getting answers with a new thread!

If I were you I’d call a vet since what you describe seems like a veterinary emergency to me.

I apologize. This is my first time posting and I’m not really sure what I’m doing. How do I start a new thread all on it’s own?

I’m just worried for my bunny and want to get answers as quick as possible. Please help!
