Fiver is only 4 months, and up until the past week or so has never been interested in cuddling or really being pet. Lately he has been loving getting his head rubbed, and will even ask for it by putting his head on my hand. He has never bitten before, but for the past two days he has been sniffing my hands and arms and sometimes I can feel his little mouth on me. I always pull away before he can either lick/bite, but before I let him do either I want to make sure I won’t end up with a wound! Should I let him finish whatever he is trying to do, or do you think he thinks I am food?

I don’t think he thinks you are food.. he is just being a brat He could be asking for attention.

One time, I was laying on the floor asleep. My bunny came to bump me with her nose and claw my blanket. I didn’t wake up, so she bit my leg… it sure woke me up.

Bunnies also use their teeth as hands. They use them to grab stuff. Moose lets me know if I am in his way by nudging me, then grabbing the offending body part with his teeth. He never bites hard, just grabs it.

Smudge does the same thing, but not as forcefully as Moosie does

Bunnies also nibble a bit when grooming, so he could just be giving you a bath. Unless he breaks skin, I wouldn’t worry about it.

A simple nibble doens’t hurt very much (at least they don’t with my bun, I’m sure all are different). She never breaks skin and at worst, it feels like a tiny pinch. If he is mad enough to actually do you harm, you’ll know. He will probably grunt/snort, charge at you, bat at you with paws. If the nibbling is accompanied with sniffing, he is probably “grooming” you. Is he neutered? I’d bet that if he isn’t, his new behavior might have something to do with that.

I think he just scrutinizing and studying you, seeing what your hand smells, tastes, and feels like. My bunny always enjoyed being petted but it took her a while to decide she loved me. During the time when she was getting to know me she often sniffed me and sometimes rested her teeth on me briefly. One day after I’d been cuddling her, she lifted her little head and started licking my nose, forehead, cheeks and chin. She was so enthusiastic that I could sometimes feel her teeth scraping lightly against my forehead. It was so sweet, I got tears in my eyes. Maybe your bunny is going to start grooming you soon. I seriously doubt he wants to bite you; if he did he probably wouldn’t be slow and shy about it.

Baby bunnies are often quite nibble-y – they want to taste everything and see what it is. It’s ok to let him do it, but if it gets annoying or painful, let him know with a high pitched yelp, or by turning your back on him. They’re also trying to see what they can get away with, as using teeth for grooming is common among other rabbits, but you’ll need to let him know that it’s not ok to groom human skin the same way.

Thanks for the replies! The information you guys gave me was spot on, I let him sniff my arm this morning and he just gave me a little nibble before he moved on to his toys. It wasn’t the greatest feeling in the world but at least the skin wasn’t broken! :] Thanks again!

He may kiss you before long then. My Gabby won’t kiss me but will give my daughter kisses on her hands or face. I’m so jealous over it.

even a love nip-is a kiss in my books. And if it’s a bite, you’ll know right away because you’ll be bleeding and swearing Trust me-bites HURT and happen quick, so sounds definitely like a kiss
