So Bailey finally had her surgery yesterday…Ever since she’s been home she has been backing up to the corner of her cage and when she is out she runs away from me..

Is this normal? She was so outgoing and loving before..Is it just b/c she is in pain? Or mad at humans now?

She is taking pain meds and finally started nibbling her food again but she acts like she doesn’t like me anymore

She probably is just in pain and wants to be left alone.

            She was spayed, right?

She sounds like she wants to be alone and is grumpy.

I’m happy that she is eating

I would keep her confined to her cage for a bit. You don’t want to risk her tearing stitches.

She doesn’t feel good. I’m not sure if you’ve ever undergone a major surgery, but you feel like garbage for awhile afterwards. Sometimes it’s not as much the surgical site as it is the groggy feeling of the anesthesia wearing off. Keep her confined to her cage for at least a few days, preferably a week (make sure there are no levels she can jump to). Pain meds can make them feel better so they overdo their exercise, and then when they wear off, they are in even more pain.

When I had my bun neutered, I was so worried that he wouldn’t like me anymore. It took about 4 days, but he came around. Extra treats and pets helped!for right now, just be extra quiet and gentle.

Give it a week for her behavior to even resemble normal, and remember that that hormones are also still in her system for up to a month. She’s uncomfortable right now and doesn’t really understand why, so she’s just coping quietly as best she can.

In a week she will love you again, (especially if you have a tasty bit of banana available). Just keep an eye on her incision site and watch for redness or swelling which would indicate a possible infection requiring a visit to the vet to check on her progress.
