Hello! Pepper was spayed 10 days ago.  I’ve noticed she stopped eating her pellets.  She still eats her veggies, LOTS of hay and water. Is this common?

Well I have heard pellets are often the last thing they come back onto when unwell. So maybe it’s the same after a spay? Had you been giving her pain meds? Some of them can cause some inappetence.

Hi Jersey, I gave her pain meds for about 3.5 days. So she’s been off it for about 6 days now.

She’s not eating any pellets at all? Or just less pellets?

Let’s put it this way, it’s really hard to tell if she IS. I give her 1/4 cup day. Usually by the next it’s more than half gone. Since her surgery, I’ve dumped most out. I guess I can put it back in the measuring cup to really track it…

Sarita- I measured the uneaten pellets this morning and the 1/4 cup was full. I’m not sure why she’s not touching it. I wonder if this is common after surgery? I better call the vet today…

I’m at a lost! So last night I spoke to the Dr. and she said to keep an eye on Pepper, and to let her know in a week if she’s still not eating her pellets. As long as she’s eating her vegetables, hay, drinking and acting normal she should be fine.

Well this morning, she refused her vegetables. NO POOP and lazy. I did give her a crasin and she ate that. Is she starting GI again???

I called the doctor this morning and left a message. She’s full all day and the receptionist said maybe I can take her and leave her overnight. Well, they do not have staff overnight, so what should I do? Keep her at home so I can watch her or leave her at the vet overnight without anyone?

Can you start hand feeding her? I would not leave her overnight but take her first thing tomorrow morning and drop her off for the vet to work her in.

I will try to start hand feeding her. I’m leaving work soon to check on her….

So I ended up taking Pepper to the vet. Dr. Harvey says its the start of GI statis (once again). She gave her Baytril for 5 days and Reglan until she’s eating well.

Pepper chews on her NIC cage quite a bit. A lot of the pieces I see on the carpet and inside the cage, but I’m sure she swallows pieces of the plastic. I wonder if this has anything to do with her tummy troubles? Any of you experience this? (Maybe I will post this question on another thread)

Did you discuss possible reasons with Dr. Harvey for his stasis issues? Did she say why she is giving Baytril? Does she suspect an infection?

Poor bun! I imagine eating plastic could contribute – any foreign material can contribute to stasis.

Have you been feeding critical care? Force feeding something with a lot of fluids is key. I’m also confused by the baytril and curious why your doc prescribed it.

Sarita/Elrohwen: The doctor said it may be stress due to her spay. I then mentioned the cage situation and she said that may be a problem as well. Got up at 5am to check on her and no poop. I gave her some cilantro and she did eat it. Checked again around 8a and she did poop! YEY! She also had poop with the mucas so hopefully since that is out she will continue to feel better.

Stupid me, I didn’t even ask what the Baytril is for. She did say Pepper’s incision opened up a little, so maybe for that? I will call to check..

It is sooo stressful for all of us. It’s so hard to give the medicine. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Baytril is to treat bacterial infections in pets. It is commonly used in dogs, cats, and rabbits.

My rabbit had ear issues and was on Baytril a few times. What worked best is that I put her on a towel on the bathroom sink and let her smell the sryinge. Some animals love the taste of it. If bunny refuses, I would wrap bunny up in a bunny burrito and put the syringe in her mouth (not too far in the mouth).
