I bought “Jute Twine” for the rabbits for some toys. I know they’ll chew it but won’t eat it, but… is Jute twine safe?

It says it is biodegradeable? I don’t know if that matters, I just can’t find a straight answer of if it’s safe or not. and the sissal twine came in a super industiral size that wouldn’t work for them…

        Anyone use jute before?

I have not used jute twine, per se, but I know that when I was shopping for a safe area rug, I found Jute highly recommended as an option. I think it was second only to seagrass matte as a good natural material for a rug.

So, unless it has been dyed with questionable ink (toxic) and it sounds like it hasn’t, I would say it’s safe. Of course, don’t let little heads and paws get wrapped in it. Are you using it for toys you’re making? I’d love to see them.

Hey, I bought both Sisal and Jute twine and I have seen conflicting views online about which is safest or not safe for rabbits. I am making my 12.5 week old Holland lop some toys (for example, she LOVES the Bag O’Hay that I made from 101bunnies’ (youtube) tutorial. For the most part she hasn’t been very destructive yet… but I’ve noticed that she has been trying to chew on fabric-like things such as the carpet, the cloth tags that stick off of my decorative pillows and floor pillow, jeans, peoples coats…

I crochet, so I wanted to use the twines to:

            • crochet her some toys that she can chew on like crochet braids dangling form her cage, and from the wire grid barricades in my apartment
            • a twine ball stuffed with her favorite hay
            • as closures for the home-made bags o’ hay
            • fasteners/connectors for cardboard tunnels and play houses.

Y’all get the drift. I bought both and would like to use both, and the sisal was quite expensive for twine – I had to order it on amazon. I like that the jute is a little bit thicker – I think it would be perfect for knotted braids for her to chew. Both are 100% natural with no added dies and are completely biodegradable. (The jute even smells kind of funky, like it came off of a farm. I bought it for $2.50 at AC Moore.)

Please HELP! I’d really like to use both but at this point, I’ve already opened both lol but I want to do what is safest and healthiest for my little bun. I really appreciate all advice!

            Best,
            Lexie

I’m posting a piccy of the chew toy I made Pebbles out of Jute. I am gonna make a variety of them. It definitely got Pebbles away from destroying my carpet >.> if Only temporarily. It might be because of the mint leaves I stuck in it…

And (now I’m showing my desperation) to whoever  helps me reach a consensus either with expertise or experience on which is safest, or if both Jute and or sisal are fine: If you don’t know how to crochet, I will MAKE you a chew toy and send it to you in the mail (as long as you live in the continental US) as a gesture of appreciation for your advice. I see some people say yey to sisal and nay to jute, some say yey to jute, some say nay to any kind of string, I just am going to go with the consensus of posters on this forum since this is where I chose to settle down as far as bunny care advice, stories, and camaraderie.

I call it: The Minty Maiden’s Jute Bow chew, I have class but when I get the chance, I will create a new thread and post a step by step tutorial (using sisal or jute, which ever is deemed safest via this thread) with pictures. :3
