Anyone know if this is rabbit safe? I know regular basil and kale are fine, but I just bought all my plants to do my front garden bed and we went with a deep purple theme and I ended up buying these stunning decorative basil plans (they smell wonderful) and decorative Kale (including Coral Queen) they are purple and blue in color.

It’s no biggie if they aren’t edible or no one knows, just wondering if anyone with a green thumb out there knows if they are still edible to rabbits-I’d love to bring in leaves for them to munch over the summer.

Not sure about decorative kale. Purple basil is fine though – it’s the same as the green stuff and used in the same way.

I just performed a search about ornamental kale, and from what I read, on several different sites, the ornamental or flowering kale is edible, but it might not be as tasty or tender. One site said that it might be more bitter than regular kale, but rabbits seem to like bitter veggies. There is a possibility that these plants might have been sprayed with pesticides, since their intended use is to be ornamental. You may want to perform some searches of your own, but it seems like they are okay to eat, being aware of the possible pesticide issue.

I have fed the ornamental kale before, purchased from the store. This one looked like a hat, white on the inside, purple on the outside. I am pretty sure that it is the same plant as regular kale.

I have also grown and fed the purple basil.

                Thanks all!!! That sounds great!
It’s safe that it’s not sprayed as we head out to the country and it’s an organic greenhouse with no sprays used-so since it’s edible Woohoo!

Yep, ornamental kale is edible for people and buns.

I’d love to see pics of your garden! I’m already planning mine for next year when we have some land.

Since you already researched the possibility of pesticides, either before or after the growing (you’re not downwind from a neighbor who uses them, right?) I’d say it’s supper time!
