Is it just my Oreo that does this??  Every morning when the lovely birds are singing, Oreo wakes us up with nonstop thumping!  She does this if she hears dogs or any loud noise…a lot of times we have to listen very carefully to even hear what she hears with those sensitive loppy ears! But I think it’s odd that bird noises bug her so much..  She acts in inspector gadget (I call it) mode, walking slowly, ears perched forward, or hiding in her cottage thumping.  Blu doesn’t even know what thumping is…he must think Oreo is nuts.  Any other buns bothered by singing birds??  I guess it’s good I’m not a pet bird owner!

I have a pet bird (jenday conure) who screeches quite loudly in the other room. If he screeches for too long or too loud, my bun will thump to show his displeasure. I don’t blame him – the noise can really get on my nerves too!

This is odd that you should mention this: currently we have what has to be the largest raven population in my town in years. The rookery must be quite near and you can hear all manner of noises (they mimic other animals and even make almost human sounds!) coming from these raucous birds fighting over mates. When our outdoor kitty is prowling they become manic, I have even seen them swooping her when she is doing nothing but walking down the road. It may be the only thing she is even mildly afraid of, which is saying something for Kitty.
At any rate, when they first began congregating here, Fiver wanted nothing to do with their noise and would thump if he even heard one that was miles away that I could not hear. He also thumps for windy days and thunder, of which he highly disapproves. He’s given up trying to drive these nuisances away at present, but his scowl is murderous.
However, the other night Mimzy surprised me by thumping at one of our night-singing birds. (with almost 24 hour daylight now, the term ‘night’ is relative) I am not entirely certain which one it is, but it has a long ans sweet song that others of it’s species repeat back to it so they can locate one anothers’ territory. Mimzy was perturbed that this noisy thing had interrupted his midnight snooze I suppose. *shrugs* His thump is distinctive so even though I was in another room I knew it was him. I came rushing in to see what was irking him and had to draw the conclusion that it was the birdsong, so I closed the window and turned on some quiet music to help drown it out. He was fine after that.

Yes, bunnies are much too precious to have to endure bird noises of any kind. Or lights on late. Or the sound of a video game or radio being played. Or human slaves talking even in hushed tones. Or sometimes just me breathing. I must learn to stop that at once! lolz…..

To a bunny, guys, birds are predators. Period. Warning, Danger, Will Robinson. The larger ones, and ravens definitely qualify, can grab a bunny with their talons. Baby bunny populations are kept down in the wild primarily by birds. It’s sad, but it’s inbred and they are warning you, their family, that a predator is nearby so you’d better wake up and take cover. Oreo is protecting his warren, and that’s you. He loves you, so he’s doing his bunny job.

But they’re cute little pretty birds? he doesn’t really know that or care. A bird is his enemy and that’s that. Genetics tell him that a small bird can take his smaller baby, so it’s time to hide them and himself.

I’m reminded of Jurassic Park, where the cute little dinosaurs got in the jeep. No predator is cute to its prey.

I totally understand what RabbitPam is saying. It’s all instinctual. BUT……..

I think it was last fall. It was nice enough to open my bedroom window and my sliding door at my apartment. One day there were men working in the neighborhood, making a lot of noise. You know….the kind of noise that is loud and annoying and DOESN’T. GO. AWAY. It woke me and Lolli up. And I definitely got a disgruntled “shut that noise up NOW!” glare from Lolli.

And Eddie thumped at the “ghosts”. I have no clue. I gauged the “threat level” by Lolli. If she didn’t freak out, then all was fine. Cause sometimes Eddie would startle himself awake and then freak out. lol

I have a cockatiel. My male rabbit and him are actually friends – the bird will preen the bunny, I make them two salads close to each other and they both eat on the floor together. But, if he starts making loud noises the bun puts his ears back and does one thump, then it’s off to the other room until the bird shuts up or starts making “nice” noises again. My new rescue, female bunny, chases his tail feathers so our bird stays out of her area to avoid being harassed.

I think it was K&K that found a study that showed rabbits’ hearing is like 10x better than ours. So with those huge ears, maybe it’s like someone else having the tv on too loud also. It’s just a pain. Not discounting what I said earlier, but adding another level of bother for bunny.

And yes, we often breathe, or just exist, to annoy them and are punished for it. Moody buggers.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and knowledge I’m glad I’m not the only one with such a sensitive bun! It’s just funny because you can never compare 2 bunnies…I think that’s why I question a lot of their behavior. Oreo and Blu are so different in their behaviors and attitudes, and what they like destroying, I mean playing with haha. It’s lovely how unique each bunny is That’s why they’re so great…you never know what to expect!

Oh and I also have noticed that if she’s sleeping it doesn’t seem to wake her or anything, she seems more bothered when she’s actually awake (evening and early morning)..so at least she’s not bothered by it constantly. We just moved into our house a few months back and it’s a lot more rural than where we used to live! So we have LOTS of wildlife and there’s an abundance of birds especially…
