My AC broke last night and it is getting hot in the house.  It is supposed to hit 92 degrees today, currently it is 80 degrees in the house.  I do remember when it broke last year and it was finally  fixed Oreo thew herself over the vent.  In the mean time does anyone have any suggestions.  I can not take them anywhere and I can’t put them in the basement.  They have never been there and it’s not bunny safe.  I made ice packs with food saver bags; not sure how to present them to the buns.  Do i put them under their blanket and let the buns find them?  I also have frozen water bottles.

I am just a paranoid bunny mom I have heard bad stories of buns getting to hot

We put our buns in their cage and put them in the basement. It’s sooooo not bunny safe down there, so they had to stay in the cage. Could you maybe contain them in something and put them down there? They may not be happy about being cooped up, but it won’t hurt them any.

Do you have a fan? My bunny sometimes plops himself down in front of the fan when it’s warm (he looks so cute with his bunny fur blowing in the breeze). If they’re in their cage/condo/living area, I wouldn’t aim it directly at the whole thing, but maybe toward one end–that way they can choose whether or not they want to sit in the breeze.

Our basement isn’t really finished. Like there’s no drywall or carpeting or anything. There are a couple of rooms down there though because of a loadbaring block wall running down the middle. I would think as long as the basement isn’t musty or moldy, then it would be fine for them to be down there temporarily. If the area isn’t bunny-safe, then they would have to be confined. Our rabbits had to stay in their cage the entire time. They weren’t happy about it, but it was better than roasting them upstairs.

yes that is true my sunshine is in my bedroom and it does get hot in there so i try to keep it cool for her. I have tried the frozen water bottle in the sock thing and she doesn’t really like it she doesn’t go near it. Then I tried making a towel damp covering part of her cage and letting the fan blow on it she seemed to like that a little bit. I have a thermometer and it says 78 degrees in my room. So ia m trying to keep it cool any other tips would be greats? thanks

We had this happen one year. We put large box fans in the windows, on one side of the house the fans blew out, on the other they sucked the air in. It made a pretty good breeze through the house. We also put wet towels over the fans and it helped to cool the air even more. The following tip is mostly for little kids, but I supposed it could be used for a pet…? We put a shower curtain down in the middle of the kitchen and a tiny plastic swimming pool on top of it with about 2 gallons of water in it. The kids would splash a little and stay cool but we didnt have to be outside in the sun. This is probably a bad idea with pets because they wont dry off as fast as kids, but if you have kids you can try it!!!
Also, you can let the bun lay in the bathtub with a towel under him. The tub is probably pretty cool, especially if its porcelain.

I’ll also vote for putting them in a cage and putting them in the basement.  Cooping them up is far better than risking heat exhaustion.

If you don’t have an easily moveable cage, just run to the nearest pet store and grab an x-pen or dog crate.

I also vote basement. Our basement is also our bedroom, and in this weather I am so glad to be sleeping down there.
