Many rabbit adoption events say they offer nail trims. Is it acceptable to go and use this as your monthly maintenance? Or is this frowned upon and mostly for those looking to bond their bunny with a new one?

It’s perfectly acceptable, as long as you check the other stuff that needs to be checked every month too

It can be a good little fund raiser for the organisation. If you want to get there nails done this way, go for it!

I agree- it is a good thing! Supports rabbit rescue and I bet the people volunteering have trimmed many bunnies nails. Plus they will be the one blamed for the indignity- not you!

How exactly are you supporting / how is it a fundraiser when it’s free?

Some places will ask for a small donation.

We accept donations at our adoption shows for nail trims but do not require them. In addition to nails, we clean scent glands if needed, check for front tooth problems, check ears for mites, check fur for obvious flea/fur mite problems, and try to get a general feel for the diet and environment of the rabbit. We aren’t vets, but we can detect some problems that owners are unaware of. Our Director views this as a sort of public service for the rabbits, as we can talk to owners about using better food, more hay, better housing, spay/neuter, etc. It is also a chance for some of us to see our foster bunnies with their adoptive families.

Oh wow, you check a lot of things! Guess I’ll bring my buns this Sat to check it out; we went to the doc recently but forgot to get a trim.

My vet charges $20 for trims for two bunnies. If a local rescue offered monthly nail trims, I would certainly want to donate at least as much as I would be paying the vet, especially considering the proceeds go to a fantastic cause and all of the little “extras” you get.
