hi everyone, today we trimmed our newly adopted rabbit’s (jospeh) nails. Everything went well, except when it was time to trim one of the front dewclaws we realised it was missing!

I’m not sure if this happened prior to us bringing him home from the rescue (3 weeks ago) or while he has been with us. We have been having bonding sessions with our other rabbit and she has been nipping at him. Is it possible that she bit it off??

Anyway, it seems like the whole dewclaw has broken off and there is some dried blood in the area. We haven’t noticed  any difference in his behaviour or ability to hop around other than he seems to be more relaxed with us now.

I’m worried that he has been/is in pain. Not really sure what to do.

This is not unusual actually. So what you are probably seeing is a little nub. It can cause pain in some bunnies, while others don’t seem to notice, so it seems like joseph is doing okay with it. It will grown back. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it does not get infected. If you notice the area bothering him or it swelling, then you may want to have a vet look at it so they can prescribe antibiotics if it becomes infected. Other than that, just keep an eye on it.

My bun Max had a few broken nails when I brought him home. They grew back just fine… now he has 18, all present and accounted for!
