Hello, so both of my babies are getting spayed and neutered in 10 days! I received the estimate from the doctor and she says the Preoperative Blood test and Intravenous Catherterization are both optional safety features

My question is, when you had your bunny spayed or neutered, did you have those two options done? Were they required by your doctor? She did mention for younger bunnies these options are not always used since younger bunnies are usually healthy, but for older bunnies they are usually required.

I think preoperative blood is definitely a good idea. I don’t know if my vets ever did the catheter on my rabbits, but I don’t think they did and all were fine without it.

We declined the pre-op bloodwork with our first bunny (@ 1y), but we decided to have it done for our second bunny’s neuter (@7 months)–we were still reeling and devestated from losing our first bunny to a sudden and unexpected illness, and we didn’t want to take any chances.  I’m really glad that we made that decision for Captain Danger, because several months later he got an E. cuniculi in his eye, and the long-term medication can cause problems with their liver enzyme levels.  It was really helpful to have those baseline bloodwork results to compare to as we monitored the effects of the treatment.

An IV catheter was included in our neuter–at least it’s listed on the pre-op paperwork as a no-charge item. It wasn’t presented as an option though.

My vet does bloodwork. Not sure about intravenous catherterization -is that like IV fluids with a cath?

The pre-op papers from Captain Danger’s neuter list IV-Cath and IV-fluids as two separate items (again, both were automatically included; not optional).

An IV cath allows instant acces to the veins for medications in case of an emergency. Often IV cath and IV fluids can be listed separately on an invoice as IV is one count and IV fluids could be listed as how many mls the pet received.

If you are unsure if your bunny had an IV cath or not- most likely a spot on the leg would be shaved for an IV cath for sterile purposes due to the hair. Unless they were to put an IV cath in an ear?- then maybe they would not shave depending where the cath was inserted.

I’m really not sure if an IV Cath was used with Meadow. I declined bloodwork. Glancing at my statement, it’s not listed.

Ok yeah my vet does that-they come home with a cute bandaid on that leg after any sedation/surgery. They put a heart on the vet wrap made of another color of vetwrap

Don’t be too nervous-sounds like your vet knows what she’s doing !!
