         Hi,

I have a quick question. Do buns ever get visibly depressed and how to do they act our their depression? I’m asking this because Brighton’s mates Rachel and Essy have been off since his passing. Both will come for a nummy, but are barely touching their veggies. I’ve seen them snacking on hay and some pellots so i know they’re eating some. They seem to just want lay around. Not entirely unusuall, but they seem really sad about it. Not lazy.  They play castle i had originally bought for the trio came in today and they’ve barely looked or touched it. It has toys and everything hanging off. Tomorrow morning i’m calling Dr. Jeanne’s office to switch Beka’s check up with Essy and see i can get Rachel in at the same time this saturday. I’m just really concerned for them both…..

Bunnies can indeed get depressed, and will grieve over lost mates. Some buns will want more attention from their humans, others less, and if they stop eating you should definitely get them into the vet.

Poor buns, losing a friend is hard

Rachel and Essy fall into “less of me is more”. I try to pick them up to cuddle or brush and they start to chew my pants or try to get down. I’ve definitly been watching their appetites. I have critical care and baby food all on hand as well.  I’ve been giving them alfalfa to try to supplement some of the food they’re not wanting to eat.

Brighton is actually the second mate Essy lost. I was worried Rachel was going to take it the hardest since she was with him the longest, but Essy seems to be the one who hurting the most…..

              I’m sorry for your loss.

My Tucker got so depressed he went into GI stasis when he lost his Cali. So definitely keep an eye out for that. Then I got Rosie for him. It still seemed like he was mourning Cali for a while there though – that was a rough bonding. When Tucker passed on, Rosie seemed to sleep a lot more than usual, and she just didn’t have the same energy level. Then I got her Alex and she perked right back up.

Are Rachel and Essy bonded? I’m glad they have each other, that has to be better than when only one bun is left after one passes away.
