        Hello,

So Daphne finally discovered the phone book that I’ve had out for her to chew for the past few weeks, and now she’s going at the binding like no other – but, being the nervous mom that I now am – I wanted to make sure that’s really okay for her to eat the phonebook, including the cover and binding?  She’s a total chewer in terms of personality, so I need “yummy” things for her to chew (like the random block of wood I have, or the cardboard tunnel I made).

Make sure you take off they cover… the cover isn’t good for buns.

Front and back cover should be ripped off. Otherwise, the other parts should be okay. The pages are made of soy based ink

Pretty much all of the bookcases in my house have old phone books on the first shelf.

So the gluey binding is okay?

Mine are also obsessed with the binding for some reason – that glue must be delicious!

I open it up and put it on the floor with the binding down so they can’t really get to it. I don’t think it’s bad for them once in a while, but like you I don’t want them just eating glue all day. And definitely take off the cover.

I tried giving one to Hodari because she likes to dig and shred things, but all she wanted to do was eat it. She doesn’t need a belly full of restaurant listings, so I took it away.

Momo likes to rip hunks of pages off and throw them all over the place.

Hannah rips off long strips and then eats them like spaghetti. I usually pull them away from her before she can suck the whole thing down, but then she just grabs another piece. They’re funny – they’ll ignore the phone book for a week or more, then one night decide they want some paper to snack on. I don’t leave it in their cage, so they only have it when they’re supervised (not that I worry about them eating it, they just don’t have room for it in their cage)

A phonebook is safe because they are printed with soy based ink, so that’s why we recommend them as chew toys.

Digesting too much of one, however, isn’t the best idea. You can try having some tasty hay pieces on hand to swap out with a bunny who’s just torn up a phone book page and wants to gobble it up.
