So I got the Hairbuster comb. I tried grooming Wooly with it today and he did not like it at all. I think it pulls his hair too much. Am I not using it right or does it just pull the hair like that? He was getting really mad at me, so I switched back to the slicker brush to finish him. Maybe it’s just his wooly hair? I am going to try to use it on Leopold if I can catch him later. He has impossibly fine, silky hair and nothing ever seems to grab it. I’m hoping the Hairbuster comb will actually grab the hair so that way I actually feel like I’m doing something when I groom him.

I thought the same thing about it pulling hair too much for my comfort, so maybe it’s just the comb? Oreo was pretty upset about it too and kept trying to attack the comb/my hand. She’s never given me any problems when I try to pluck the hair out so I wasn’t expecting that reaction. But she was in desperate need of grooming when I got it so I just used it. Afterwards, I ended up concerned that it had pulled too much hair out as she seemed to have some super thin spots that just didn’t look right. So I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Yep, I was getting boxed! He wasn’t happy, but he was fine when I switched back to the slicker brush.

I’ve found that the angle you hold it at really impacts the amount of hair pulling. If you hold it perpendicular to the skin, the doesn’t pull as much as if you hold it at an angle. Not sure how it would work for wooly breeds, but that’s my experience on my two.

I had the same problem. I felt like it pulled their hair and they didn’t like it. I still use it and it works really well. I just feel bad.
LBJ: can you post a link of the slicker brush?

Mocha – It’s a brush that belonged to my cat. I’m not sure where it came from. It has short plastic bristles with round ball tips. It has been the best thing so far with Wooly’s hair.

It’s sort of like this one, but the bristles aren’t quite as long.

The hairbuster is my personal favorite and I am not just saying that because we sell it. When I use a comb type, hairbuster, I comb their fur in a similar fashion of how I brush tangles out of my own hair. I press my hand a little behind the comb protecting the roots. That helps alot with Vivian. I don’t have to do that as much with Jack because his fur is shorter and course, but he is not fond of brushing of any kind (I have every brush you can imagine), so I follow the comb with my hand like i am petting him. See if that will help.

I follow with my hand too. Or if it seems like it’s tugging too much, I will either try a lighter touch or will just start plucking. Either way, Lolli hates it. lol And it didn’t seem to work very well until she started her major shedding. It really gets the tufts out. But it doesn’t work very well for just loose hairs. If that makes sense.

Yes, I was trying to hold onto his hair with my other hand as I worked the comb through the ends. He was still angry with me! LOL

Exactly! Wooly is probably screaming that as loud as he can inside his head.

awe… That’s not good. I haven’t had those problems, but if you find that this doesn’t work for you and you’ve ordered it from our store, please let me know via messaging or emailing.

I have yet to try it on Leopold. It just might work well for his slick hair.

The only thing that concerns me about the hairbuster is that the tines end in such sharp points. So no matter how careful I am, I find sometimes I still end up with those pointing down on my bunnies’ skin and I worry that I have poked a hole.
Pip is especially not liking how the little rubber part pulls her tufts out, but it is marvelous for getting the loose fur/shedding patches off. Even the furminator doesn’t bring these results! My bunnies just aren’t fond of the method is all.
On a good note, I’ve finally gotten Fiver to endure the lint roller. ^_^

It’s so sad to hear all these awful things. I don’t want bunnies to feel tortured.      So many people have sworn by this comb, and tons of the shelters around here just flip out about how well it works for them. But if this thread is showing a “dark” side of the “dreaded” hairbuster that I haven’t experienced,  then I may rethink it or at least add some info on the description that may be helpful.

BB – I don’t think it’s a bad brush or anything. I know with Lolli, it’s not going to matter which method I use. She’s just HATES grooming in general. lol I just worried a bit about it pulling too much since their skin is so delicate. And it’s designed to be able to pull the loose fur out. I have also wondered if maybe they hate brushing in general cause it tickles them? I’ve run the brushes over my skin with the same pressure I use on them and it is a weird, slightly ticklish feeling. But maybe I’m just weird. LOL

Thanks Michelle&Lolli, you are not weird (no weirder than I, anyway….so yeah, that might not be saying much). LOL. Seriously, though, you are very sweet. (BTW – I need to figure out what is going on with your “Display Name—it is showing up in HTML code.)

I think that there are many good things about this comb which is why we sold it in the first place, but at the same time, though it’s disappointing to hear the negatives, I want to know what’s going on with all of this bunny disapproval. There are two sides. It’s easy to hear all the good which is why I recently promoted it.. Yet I certainly don’t want all these concerns that are now popping up to fall on deaf ears. . Just one complaint is one thing, but it seems there are a few .  I hate to hear it, but at the same time I prefer to know and figure out what to do about that part. So thank you for letting me know what you feel is going on.

BB – I agree with Michelle&Lolli that it’s not a bad comb. Despite how much Oreo might not like it, or the amount of “pulling” it does on the fur, it’s the only comb I’ve bought so far that has actually gotten results. I have several versions of slicker brushes that just did nothing so it is nice to have something that actually gets the clumps of fur out.

But like you said there are two sides and I admit I’ve though of some things that might make the brush a little easier on Oreo’s fur. For example, I think if the tines were spaced out farther apart, it might not tug on the fur as much. I also think it would be nice to have a comb that is half the length of the hairbuster. Currently the hairbuster is almost as long as Oreo’s body which makes maneuvering a little awkward when I could be combing her bum and its still long enough for her to bite the other end. I realize neither of these are things you can control, they’re just my ideas. A friend of mine does metal work professionally so I may actually have the means to cut out some of the tines and round out the tips a bit more to see if that helps. Anyway, I figure, it’s just like any other bun product, it gets a different reaction from each bun/slave and everyone just has to figure out what works for them!

BB, I don’t find the hairbuster pulls fur any more than the furminator, and because it’s light and you don’t have to point the tines directly into their skin, I think it’s better. Mine hate brushing of any kind – you would think just petting was torture to Otto. The slicker brush works well for looser hairs, but nothing works on the tufts like the hairbuster.

I llokked up the website hairbuster.com and it says each of their combs IS made with rounded tines, although from reading some of this thread, still quite pointy even being rounded, and causing pain? I too, find that the hairbuster is the really effective tool, pulling tufts of hair out and catching it on its sleeve for relatively easy removal. The one I got from the BB Store is the one I use on Dustor and I do take care to go gentle on him. As Elrohwen advises, I too, hold the comb perpendicular to the skin and hold the hair toward the skin when combing the outer parts of the strands outward. Of all the tools I’ve tried, the hairbuster is the only comb that lets me feel I’m doing an effective job of getting the hair.

I love the hairbuster both my boys love it when I brush them with it and will usually fall asleep while I am brushing them. I haven’t seen it or felt that it was pulling their hair.

I have several different brushes slicker, wire, ‘rake’, rubber, pin, etc. but none would even put a dent in Pacey’s shedding and wouldn’t even make it through a mat on Dini but the hairbuster works amazingly on them.

I no longer feel like I am covered in rabbit hair all the time lol.

I brush at an angle as well while holding the base of the hairs I am brushing.

The hairbuster works GREAT on my Holland Lop! I raved about it for weeks (months) after I purchased it from BB and said things like “This comb has CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!” which might have been a slight exaggeration, but seriously–I was that excited about it. All of the combs I tried before just sent loose fur floating into the air–this was the first one that actually removed and contained the fur.

Captain Danger tolerates just fine, but he definitely has certain times when he’s not in the mood for grooming. I leave the comb accessible so that I can give him just a few minutes of light grooming throughout the day (whenever he’s feeling cooperative), rather than have less-frequent but more-prolonged grooming sessions. I’m also careful to comb very gently–I never place the comb straight down onto his skin, but hold it at an angle (so it’s almost lying flush with his skin) and gently run it through his fur–if there’s resistance, I don’t push it–I just assume that clump will come out next time! FWIW, Captain Danger’s fur is very fine, but quite thick in some spots (e.g. on his backside). Oh, and I pet his face (nose, cheeks) a lot while I’m grooming him to keep him content

I just used mine the second time today it seems to work great! I do feel like it pulls a little but really it would be the same if i was plucking. She hates being groomed to the point of nipping at me but I am always covered in white rabbit hair and have to wear black scrubs to work so I think it helps a bit! Maybe I should do it nightly! Might be better for her in time.

I tried it on Leopold. Boy, he wasn’t happy! LOL! But I think it will be okay to use on him. It was actually grabbing his undercoat, something that no other brush/comb has been able to do so far. It pulls, but I don’t think it is quite as bad on him since his fur is short and slick.
