I ran out of rabbit pellets but I have a lot of guinea pig pellets left. I dont want to go get more and I also want to use up the oxbow guinea pig food so I can order them kleenmama pellets. Would it be ok to temporarily feed them Oxbow cavy cuisine? I think the main difference is the pig food has added vitamin c but I dont now if extra vitamin c would be harmful or not. Im assuming it wont but I want to make sure.

Generally, food specified for an animal should only be fed to that animal. The pellets are nutritionally based for guinea pigs and will probably not be beneficial to rabbits. Also, it may contain certain vitamins/minerals that are toxic to rabbits in high amounts. So…I wouldn’t feed guinea pig food to my bunnies. Since you ran out, you should be able to get by for a day with feeding more hay and lettuce as that’s what your bunny needs the most of anyways.

The bunny sanctuary here feeds their bunnies Kleenmama’s guinea pig pellets because they are neighbors.  I’ve asked KM’s to start making rabbit pellets, but I don’t think she will.  (I still buy rabbit Kaytee Timothy complete because thats all that’s sold here).  They say the only difference is more vitamin C in guinea pig pellets, which bunnies will just pee out the extra.  I think its ok in a pinch, but you should ask your vet if you’re thinking long term.

I think KMS are guinea pig pellets like lwayne said, not rabbit.

I mean I will get my guinea pigs KM pellets. Not the rabbits. I will get them some more oxbow rabbit food. I just cant until wednesday and I was hoping I could give them Oxbow guinea pig to use it up faster because I want to get KM for the pigs.

When you change their food your supposed to do it gradually so it doesn’t upset their stomachs I guess? So I think your best bet is to give lots of hay and vegetables, and leave the cavy food for the cavy Oh, and not wait to get rabbit food until the last minute!

I agree with the number up there. Changing a food like that and switching back isn’t a good thing, so just stick with hay ad veggies til you get more bunny pellets.

I went to the Oxbow website to see the ingredients and analysis of adult rabbit pellets and adult cavy pellets. They are almost identical, the main difference is the added vitamin C in the Cavy Cuisine (400mg/kg). I don’t know if the vitamin C would be harmful, but I see on the HRS website that vitamin C can be given to rabbits to help with bladder stones and slludge, so it seems like the pellets with the vitamin C would be okay for them, especially if it’s only for a day or two, and a small amount.  But if you feel uncomfortable using the Guinea pig pellets, then they should be fine with extra hay and veggies.

They only get 1/4 cup to share between the 2 of them but I think I will just give extra veggies (along with unlimited hay). Im not so sure about the pig pellets any more.

I agree with the others that switching their food around isn’t a good idea. Even besides the fact that it’s for piggies, it’s a different brand and they may not react well. Otto got a few bites of a different timmy pellet one time and had horrible poopy butt.

When you do purchase the Kleenmamas Pig pellets, you will still need to transition the piggies onto the new food, so make sure to order the new stuff when you have enough of the old Oxbow to make the full transition.

Thanks for reminding me. I have never had to switch foods. They have been on oxbow since I got them so I forgot I need to switch slowly.
