Hi there my bun is currently battling cancer and is on pain medication twice a day. I noticed to day when I was petting him that he has dandruff and there is one spot like right by his shoulder blades on the top that it is alot of flaking skin like a human that has bad dandruff. I have an appointment already scheduled with the vet this thursday. I was wondering what it could be and is it serious?

I was wondering if I should call the vet and get my rabbit in tomorrow instead of thursday?

            hi,

this skin issue probably isnt so critical that you cant wait an extra day, but there is a chance it may be related to the cancer.

how long has your bun been on treatment for the cancer? what method did you go with? My bunny Fubuki was diagnosed with a thymoma last june, and she fought all the way until mid-february before losing the battle. we chose to go the steroid treatment route, and it worked awesome for the first 6 months. but she did develop a secondary skin condition that progressed rapidly over her final 5 weeks. its been almost 3 months now, but i still cry over her

I am going with metacam because the cancer is on his spine it is a cancerous tumor. Iam just worried that it is fur mites?

I agree with longhairmike and he can be a good resource and support to help you as well since he experienced cancer with his beloved Fubuki.

compared to what cancer can do, fur mites are one of the cheapest and easiest things to treat.

i would have welcomed a confirmed mite diagnosis with a big “F- YEAH!!” to my vet, then bought her a beer

if your bun is NOT currently on any steroidal meds (metacam is just for pain/ anti-inflammitory), then advise the vet to get a mite shot,, if there is no improvment in a week, then get a skin biopsy.

the problem we had with buki was that the reaction between the only known treatment for her skin condition (sebacious adenitis) was an immunosuppresant,, and she was ALREADY on prednisolone to fight the thymoma. the two of them on top of each other would have destroyed her immune system almost immediately.

I called my vet and they can’t get me in tomorrow so i am keeping my thursday appointment. I do have another bun a female she is in a different part of the house away from kamdyn. Is there something I should do till i go to the vet?

until the vet confirms mites or not,, probably best not to let them romp around together.
the V between the shoulderblades is where many buns do their heaviest shedding. if you just started running your A/C recently,, the drop in indoor humidity could also just be triggering dry skin and her scratching

I don’t have air condition in my home and my buns don’t get along so I don’t let them near each other. Yes my bun has been shedding for a few weeks now. Thanks for all the help. It just seems with his cancer it is one thing after another. I read an article on the quality of life they said if your bun gives affection, eats well, and is very perkey that is a sign of quality of life. my buns does all that it just seems there is more problems everyday that arises with this cancer. sometimes it is to much on him. thanks again for all your help
