hey everyone, Dandela is doing great. I got her some new pellets, and started mixing her alfalfa hay with timothy hay, and I got some cage liners that are very soft, so when she has to be in her cage she will not be on the wire. I also got her a toy, but it was packed with seeds and stuff so I removed all that before letting her have it. take a look at the pics. let me know if you can or can not see them.

I don’t know about that toy, usually they are made of not so great stuff(even with the seeds out). It also looks like its for guinea pigs or hamsters? I’m sure our expert BB’rs will chime in though.

You might want to look on craigslist or watch for sales on real rabbit cages with plastic bottoms, or xpens. Chances are pretty good that Dandela is going to think her new bedding is a litter box, and negate all your litterbox training.

What happened to your bunny room and how was the vet visit?

I know where you are, you are a bit more limited with choices, but I think the fact that you are making an effort to look for better food choices and make sure Dandela has soft bedding is wonderful. I am so glad you changed from the Guinea pig pellet to a pellet meant for rabbits. Yeah! I am not familiar with the pellet but noticed it was alfalfa based and that is fine for a baby rabbit — It is a bit higher in protein and fat but that is fine for a growing bunny. When your bunny does get older, you will want to switch to Timothy based, lower protein and fat, and keep fiber as high as possible.

And having the mix of Alfalfa and Timothy is also a great choice!

What kind of lining did you end up using? Hopefully if it it’s cloth, you were able to get more than one, so you can have one being washed while one is in the cage.

I also got her a toy, but it was packed with seeds and stuff so I removed all that before letting her have it. take a look at the pics. let me know if you can or can not see them.

Smart move to take all that seeds and stuff out! I don’t know what the actual chew toy log is made of — similar products in that line I think are alfalfa and honey or something. So you will want to monitor very carefully as you don’t want her to nibble too much. So, if you see in the ingredients that has some sugary binding stuff, then you may want to be careful with that.

All and all though I am glad to see that you are looking for ways to better Dandela’s care!

I would also talk to your vet about the that toy and ask them for pellet choices — since you will have to switch later on.

there were no ingredients in the toy. but I repacked it with some of her hay. the toy is for chewing to keep the teeth from overgrowing. that is why you pack it with stuff they want to make them nibble on it. She has not been to the vet yet, and the liners I got for her. I have 7 that you can cut to any size. it absorbs wet stuff, keeping the top dry, just in case she does not go to the litter box. they are a one time use though, and can not be washed. I will keep you updated.

                        Here’s the ingredients-
Pine Wood Shavings, Cassava Starch, Alfalfa, Liquid Mix (Water, Sodium Alginate, Potassium Sorbate, Propionic Acid, Honey, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol)

I thought pine shavings were poisonous to buns??

Pine shavings are not good for buns, but I’m assuming they are used as an additional “binder” to keep it together, and if so, they must be baked which would (probably?) remove the dangerous phenols that make pine shaving bedding so problematic. I am more concerned about the honey and other binders. In limited amounts, these toys are okay, but a better alternative would be dried willow branches/toys like the ones available online at this site and sites like busybunny… Willow is fully edible and very safe.

And no, shavings are not “poisonous”, altho when used over a long period of time, the phenols that are released can cause liver damage (allegedly) and possible issues with the respiratory system.

To be on the safe side, house rabbit advocates and vets take a stand and just say “NO pine or cedar shavings”.  There are many cheaper, safer, and more absorbent litters available.
