Tigger is 6 years old and I was told he was an English Spot by the humane society I adopted him from however I later learned that he is more likely some sort of Mini Rex mix. He currently weighs 7 pounds and I was told that because his “dewlap” is visible he’s overweight. Is this true?

[Below is a picture of him] he looks chubby in some pictures, and really tiny in others

Seven lbs. in a mini rex is a robust adult but not particularly overweight. He would be a bit healthier at about 6 1/2 if he has a dewlap. My spockie was a mini rex and he got up to 8 lbs. in his prime, but he was at his best on the up side of 6 lbs.

I have the opposite with Samantha. I was told she was probably a mini rex mix, and she seems to be totally English Spot. Lighter & leaner. There is no mistaking the difference by the feel of the fur. If Tigger feels like velvet, he is a rex. If he feels more like silk, he is an English Spot (or a mix) but not a mini rex.
They are the only ones that feel like velvet. He looks like a mini rex to me.

I imagine he’s actually a Standard Rex rather than a Mini Rex mix but he looks like some kind of English Spot mix to me. I think most everyone calls every Rex a Mini Rex – I made this mistake for a long time but there are Standard Rexes that are larger. Really Mini Rexes are about 5 lbs at the most. But those are standards set by breeders. I do think that there is a different look to a Standard than a Mini though.

Cute name! I can’t tell from the photos if he’s a rex. It almost looks like his fur is too long? And I can’t get a good sense of the shape of his head (they tend to be pointy-er).

My rex is at a good weight, and he has a “dewlap,” too. It looks different from the typical female dewlap – it’s like a little shelf of fur, not a bigger mound. Now when I got him, he was very overweight, so I don’t know if the dewlap would have formed if he had been at a good weight his entire life. I don’t know that much about rexes as a breed specifically.

I do know that rexes are prone to weight gain, so it does make sense to watch his weight. You should be able to see his shoulders and a slight indentation before his hip bones when he’s up and moving around. My rex just gets a 1/2 teaspoon of pellets in the a.m. (+salad) & a 1/2 t in the p.m. (+ salad) and hay.

Your dwarf doesn’t look overweight at all to me – he just looks fluffy.

The photo of your other bunny – really impossible to tell if he has a weight problem. Is your vet saying he’s overweight?
