Good morning! So I took the buns in to see the vet yesterday for their second check up in about 2 months.  She did notice Sugars teeth weren’t aligned quite right.  She said the bottom teeth are overlapping the top so he may be one of the buns that will need his teeth trimmed. She said to wait and see since he’s still growing.  She is hoping his jaw will grow a bit and his teeth will eventually align.  Have any of you had experience with this? Trimming the teeth…that sounds a little uncomfortable? What do you think?

I told her about Pepper’s tummy problems from the past and how her poop is sometimes abnormal (soft and mucus, so to be safe she prescribed Trimethoprim to give her for two weeks. I’ve been trying to chase her down all morning to give it to her!  She’s just not having it!

So the big news is they are both going back in three weeks to get spayed and neutered.  I’m excited but starting to get nervous already!

Have a great weekend everyone and Happy Mother’s day!

When we first adopted Peppy, her teeth were misaligned…like you mentioned, her bottom teeth were overlapping her top teeth a bit. Because she was still young, and because her teeth were so very close to being normally aligned, the vet said that if we were lucky and kept doing the trims, they might grow back correctly some day. I guess things did turn out pretty well, because just a few trims later I checked her teeth one day and they were normal looking! Apparently it doesn’t spontaneously resolve like this very often, and we got pretty lucky. It probably helped that we discovered the problem and started the trims when she was quite young too.

Milo on the other hand…when the shelter picked him up, his teeth were already so severely overgrown that he could hardly eat. They tried trimming for a while, and after it became clear that his teeth would never align correctly, they just went ahead and had his incisors removed (this was all done before we adopted him).

I don’t think the tooth trimming should be too uncomfortable…they usually put the buns under anesthesia just for a little bit to do the procedure. I’d even say that Peppy was happier after her trim…when she first came home I realized she avoided very crunchy foods and had a weak bite, though I didn’t know why at the moment. After the trims she started eating better; I’d say that it made her feel more comfortable. Keep us updated with Sugar’s teeth!

I hope Sugar’s teeth become more aligned. I think many people have to trim their bunny’s teeth. Some breeds are predisposed to misaligned teeth like lops and netherland dwarves. My female nethie Lago might have to go in under anesthesia and have her peg teeth trimmed if she starts changing the way she eats according to the vet.

As for the spay/neuter, you shouldn’t be too worried. Some anxiety is normal, but if you have a good rabbit vet, they should come out fine. Be sure they give you some pain meds for them. The vet that spayed Lago (I found out later he lost is license from a different vet) didn’t give me any meds for her and was probably in pain since was didn’t start eating until the 3rd day after. I ended up having to syringe feed her critical care.

I think the most encouraging thing is that the vet has discovered the alignment issue and will be watching it from now on. Growing into a better alignment is good news, so let’s hope. But tooth trims are not unusual and some vets are more experienced with them. You could ask your vet if this is what they commonly do and how it is done.

I think it’s Sarita who has the most extensive experience with teeth in the bunnies, and BB also, so if you let us know the details of how your vet will proceed, they can assess if it’s the least difficult of the possibly treatments.

Don’t worry about the spay and neuter. That’s great news! Again, you can ask your vet about how much experience she’s had.

P.S. I just spotted in the Diet and Care Section that jerseygirl had posted a video of dental procedures – it’s pinned with a little thumbtack graphic to the top of the forum. You can check that out if you want to see what can be done for bunny teeth.

Sounds like you found a good rabbit vet. An inexperienced vet would not have noticed the subtle problem in the teeth most likely.

Peppypoo: I hope Sugar will be as lucky as your Peppy! I thought of something last night. I may ask the doctor to see if it is a good idea to do the neuter and trimming at the same time if he has to be put asleep.

Helenor: Yep, both mine are Nethie’s! I will also make sure I get pain meds after their procedure.

RabbitPam: Let’s keep our fingers crossed and thank you for letting me know about the video.

Katnip: I think so too. Markbun recommended her and her name has been mentioned a couple times here on the forum!

I will let you know. He is going in tomorrow morning. It’s going to be a very stressful day for Mama!! I hate the thought of my bunny being scared and me not being there, but my vet is really good with rabbits and I trust her 100%.
