I’ve had my rabbit Zoey for about 3 years now and it seems like she is graduallying turning more and more into a lop rabbit.  I figured she was a totally mixed breed when I got her, but is it possible for her to gradually look more and more like a lop (after 3 years)?  Below are some pictures to show you what I mean.  Let me know what you think.

Here she is a 5-6 months – totally upright ears:

These 2 are showing her feet:

Here is a somewhat recent one showing a half flopping ear

And here is her totally flopped ears last night (however lately it has been one up and one down)

So does this mean she’s part lop now?

Aww your buns are gorgeous! My Tammo (who was a Dutch) started out with completely uppy ears too, but then by the time he got to be 2 years old or so they got very droopy and never stood up straight again. They never completely lopped like your last picture, but I’ve always wondered too if he had some lop somewhere in his bloodline.

I am not sure about this! The first pic- totally looks like an uppy-eared bunny and not even a suggestion of lopping in the ears or any of the shortened face of most common lop breeds.
I would not have even guess it was the same rabbit. I do know that uppy eared buns do seem to have more control over their ears- but not to the point of consciously going from
full upright ears to complete lop at will/muscle contraction/relaxation.

Thank you for the responses! I was just a little confused on her gradual transformation and was not sure if it was something that was common. This morning she decided to go back to the 1 ear up, 1 ear down, but she can never really make up her mind – typical. I guess maybes she just feels like wearing her ears differently each day so her new boyfriend of 1 year doesn’t get bored with her – spice up the relationship a little haha. Who knows! But thank you for your input!

“And for my next trick… I will sneak the second black rabbit out of my cape and replace the uppy-eared bun with a full-blown lop…”

My lop has a lot of control over his ears. A lot. He can hold them straight up, to the sides, one up, one down… I do not know his breed other than he has loppy ears 98% of the time, therefore he is a lop. He’s likely mixed with something…

For your bun, the ear position/attachment on the head screams lop. Lops have a wider space between their ears. You can place your whole hand between her ears, with your male, you could only put 1-2 fingers between his ears.

I also think the body shape looks more “loppish”, aka a bunny log. Lops are so squarish…

Rupert does that when he’s relaxed and the one up one down when he’s interested…huh never thought he might be mixed…wonder if they just have super control of their ears or what?

She definitely looks part lop. When ears lop, it’s because there is a wide space on the head and lack of ear control to keep them up. With mixed breed buns, or even non-show quality purebred lops, the ears can be close enough together to allow the bunny to control if they’re up or down, which seems like the case with your bun.

She actually looks like a purebred lop to me, based on her face and body shape, just not show quality, of course, since her ears aren’t completely lopped. Even in the first pic she seems to have more distance between her ears than a normal uppy eared bunny, plus they are sort of a rounded shape like lops generally have.

Partially loppy ears are my favorite!

Oooo the ear spacing totally makes sense on why they are lopping. I never really thought of that or compared her ear spacing to my other bun. I could definitely tell that they had totally different body shapes though. Thanks for all your input!

Samson’s Mum – I dont officially know how much of a lop she is, but here are a few somewhat recent pics of her with both ears up and looking a little chubby

She looks so much like my mini lop girl. She’s got the chubby lop look going on. Haha. Her face looks loppy to me too. Love her! I might have to steal her

Cotton seemed to have more control when she was a baby and teenager- but all her and Schroeder can do is swivel their ears a little when they are alert. I have not ever
ever noticed any muscle control with Griffin’s ears (they are their own separate entity.. LOL). : )
