  Someone posted a comment on one of my youtube videos if Sunny is a cottontail bunny. What makes a cottontail? Is it a particular breed? Or does it just mean they have a white tail? The underside of his tail is white. His mom is a holland lop, and they don’t know what rabbit fathered the litter as she was outside loose when she conceived.

  If I am not mistaken, a cotton tail is a species of wild rabbit.

  yes a cottontail is a wild rabbit. Wild rabbits and domestic are unable to breed – different chromosomes. Many rabbits though have white tails and the rest of their fur is colored.

  Like Sarita mentioned- pet rabbits are bred from European rabbits. And European rabbits can’t reproduce with Eastern Cottontails which are common in the US. There are many breeds of rabbits that can have that “wild” coloring- often called agouti.
